📋 Description

• Support all aspects of waterfront operations at Palmer Station, Antarctica • Advise Station Management on all aspects of marine operations as one of three resident professional mariners • Operate and maintain a fleet of approximately fifteen active small boats, reserve vessels, and two 30' research vessels • Operate vehicles and equipment to launch and recover small boats via trailer • Oversee maintenance of inboard diesel systems, hydraulics, outboard motors, inflatable boats, and rigid hull inflatables • Provide training and oversight for station personnel in marine safety, seamanship, navigation, radio protocol, boat handling, float plans, rough-weather and sea-ice operations, vessel safety, cold-water survival, oceanographic systems, trailering, and remote operations • Maintain daily operational records, vessel logs, situation reports, fuel usage, equipment maintenance, launch/recovery records, and turnover reports • Prepare and maintain Palmer Station boating-operation documentation, including JHAs and Standard Operating Procedures • Maintain stock and records of extensive spare-parts inventory • Inspect safety, lifesaving, firefighting, and emergency equipment • Maintain moorings • Maintain the safety and cleanliness of shop areas

🎯 Requirements

• Must have an active NSF Public Trust Security Clearance to be considered • US Citizenship is required • Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date • Must complete the physical and dental examinations required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica • USCG Captain’s OUVP license, or equivalent experience when no 30’ RHIBs are present • Minimum three years of experience acting as Captain, or equivalent vessel-maintenance experience in seasons with no RHIB operation • Minimum two years of experience driving motorized small vessels • Minimum two years of experience maintaining small vessel systems and hulls, or equivalent • Experience in commercial marine operations such as merchant marine, fisheries, or boatyards • Comprehensive knowledge of small vessel operation, trailering, troubleshooting and maintenance • Proven ability to repair and troubleshoot engines and/or machinery including 4-stroke outboards, diesel, and inflatables • High level independent problem-solving and multi-tasking skills • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong customer service skills
