Local Progress + Local Progress Impact Lab is a movement of local elected officials dedicated to advancing a racial and economic justice agenda. Founded in 2012, this organization has built a network of over 1100 local elected officials across 46 states, including mayors, district attorneys, county commissioners, city councilmembers, and school board members. Their mission focuses on empowering underrepresented communities, sharing innovative policy ideas, and reshaping governance to address challenges faced by the many, rather than just the wealthy elite. Through collaboration, they facilitate policy change at local, state, and national levels, fostering new governance models that work for diverse populations. Local Progress operates under the Center for Popular Democracy, which manages daily functions and member engagement.

📋 Description

• Lead the development and implementation of a California statewide strategy • Build organizing and governance infrastructure to grow and strengthen membership and support and mobilize local elected officials across California • Represent Local Progress, the Impact Lab, and the state chapter in statewide coalitions, campaigns, and strategic tables • Embed Local Progress within California’s movement ecosystem as a trusted advocacy and organizing partner • Recruit and engage California-based members • Provide and facilitate policy, communications, and campaign support to members • Cultivate relationships with allies, state and local partners, labor, and funders • Establish Local Progress as a coalition partner for trans-local and statewide campaigns • Design and execute local and statewide leadership development initiatives • Collaborate across teams on caucuses, state chapter activities, academies, labs, reports, convenings, and web products • Supervise up to three organizing team members and support staff development • Lead an assigned fundraising portfolio and identify funding opportunities • Support national policy, organizing, and campaign projects

🎯 Requirements

• Must reside in California, with a preference for Northern California • 7–10+ years of organizing, strategic campaigning, and/or advocacy experience • 3+ years of demonstrated success supervising staff across diverse issues and functions • 3–5 years of demonstrated fundraising success • Experience in relational organizing • Ability to engage and mobilize diverse groups across local contexts and virtual settings • Experience designing membership-based and/or issue-based organizing strategies • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects • Ability to create and execute organizing work plans • Ability to anticipate obstacles, navigate challenges, identify stakeholders, and drive projects independently • Commitment to inside/outside strategy and movement governance • Demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice • Deep interest in local policy, politics, and government • Ability to work flexible, long hours when necessary • Ability to travel approximately 1–2 times per month, up to 6 days per month • Experience leading and managing multi-stakeholder coalitions preferred as an ideal-candidate qualification • Previous experience working with elected officials preferred as an ideal-candidate qualification
