📋 Description

• Complete approximately 20 weeks of online classroom training • Complete approximately 19 weeks of online internship/remote hands-on training • Learn health insurance, healthcare settings, medical coding, reimbursement, billing, legal and regulatory issues, and claim processing • Prepare for AAPC CPB and CPC certification exams • Provide coding services in accordance with payer requirements, organizational policies, and coding guidelines • Abstract diagnoses and procedures from patient medical records and online patient data • Review patient encounters and accurately assign diagnosis and procedure codes • Research provider or office information through Epic in-basket when necessary • Assist with denied-claim research • Meet assigned productivity goals • Provide accounts receivable services and maximize reimbursement • Bill Medicare, Medicaid, self-pay/uninsured, and commercial insurance claims • Monitor receivables, check claim status, resubmit overdue claims, file corrected claims or appeals, and escalate seriously overdue accounts • Post patient payments, electronic remits, and paper EOBs • Correct claim and charge errors and resolve credit balances • Answer patient and responsible-party calls regarding account balances • Maintain patient and organizational data confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA • Perform billing, data-entry, computer-operations, and other assigned projects

🎯 Requirements

• Applicants MUST LIVE in the State of California • Must be 18 years or older • Must have a high school diploma or GED • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident/Green Card holder; not open to non-citizens or visa holders • Must successfully pass a national criminal background check • Must participate 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8 AM–5 PM, for the entire program • Bilingual Spanish speaker preferred but not required • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, is beneficial • Familiarity with California Billing preferred but not required • COVID-19 vaccination required, or approved medical/religious exemption, prior to program acceptance • For on-site internships/externships, must meet host-site immunization requirements, which may include influenza, hepatitis B, and MMR vaccinations • May need to complete tuberculosis testing and drug screening before placement

🏖️ Benefits

• Total stipend of $31,200 distributed over approximately 44 weeks • Monthly Health Marketplace reimbursement up to $600 for 44 weeks (participant cost only; some restrictions apply) • Internet stipend of $35/month for 44 weeks • Training and remote hands-on internship experience • Preparation for AAPC Certified Professional Biller (CPB) and Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certifications • Upon successful program completion and a passed exam, certification in medical billing and medical coding
