📋 Description

• Own the vision and delivery of Openly’s data science capabilities • Prioritize initiatives driving pricing precision, underwriting performance, and profitable growth • Partner with pricing, underwriting, product, and engineering leadership • Serve as the insurance product authority on data science methodology • Represent Insurance Data Science in senior leadership conversations • Set technical standards for cost and demand modeling using GLMs, gradient boosting, neural approaches, and other ML methods • Drive modeling strategy across existing and expansion states for homeowners and personal auto products • Govern the model lifecycle from development through validation, deployment, monitoring, and refresh • Collaborate with actuaries to operationalize model outputs within regulatory and pricing frameworks • Advance data science capabilities through strategic research with Data/Machine Learning Engineering • Collaborate on code quality, version control, peer review, testing, reproducibility, and documentation standards • Invest in infrastructure, tooling, access, and scalable engineering capabilities • Evaluate and introduce tools, platforms, and data sources • Lead, expand, and develop the Insurance Data Science team • Own hiring and team structure decisions with the Chief Insurance Product Officer • Mentor senior individual contributors and managers • Report directly to the Chief Insurance Product Officer

🎯 Requirements

• 15+ years of experience in data science or a closely related quantitative/actuarial field • At least 8 years in a leadership role managing highly analytical teams • Deep technical fluency in predictive modeling, including GLMs, gradient boosting, and modern ML methods • Demonstrated experience delivering production models in a regulated, data-intensive industry • Experience across cost modeling, including loss ratio, frequency, severity, and pure premium • Experience across demand modeling, including conversion, retention, and price elasticity • Extensive experience in personal lines insurance with models directly driving pricing and underwriting decisions • Familiarity with the actuarial context in which data science operates • Track record of building and leading high-performing data science teams • Strong technical and strategic communication skills • Cross-functional collaboration with technical and executive stakeholders • Commercial understanding of loss ratios, growth, and profitability • Ability to operate in a growth-stage company amid strategic clarity and operational ambiguity
