📋 Description

• Work on empirical foundations of AI safety with a mentor from research question through experiments and next-step decisions • Own a substantial part of a safety research project end to end • Turn high-level safety questions into hypotheses, baselines, and controlled experiments • Implement and debug evaluation harnesses, agent environments, datasets, monitoring methods, or post-training experiments • Identify confounds and distinguish model capabilities from behavioral tendencies • Interpret negative results and determine next experiments with limited direction • Produce reproducible code, experiment logs, analysis, and precise technical writing • Submit research papers to top ML conferences, subject to research, security, and communications review • Meet weekly with a Scale researcher who sets direction and provides feedback

🎯 Requirements

• Motivated by ensuring the safe and responsible development of advanced AI systems • Interest in technical safety research, such as alignment evaluations, AI control, monitoring, multi-agent safety, or open-weight model safety • Pursuing or have completed a PhD in CS, ML, statistics, mathematics, or a related field, or an equivalent track record • Able to make progress with high-level guidance, including implementing, debugging, getting unstuck, interpreting results, and proposing next experiments • Clear research communication skills • Ability to handle confidential information and internal systems responsibly • Submit a resume or CV, Google Scholar profile if available, and one substantially owned research project with 2–3 sentences on contribution • Complete applicable recruiting, work-authorization, security, and project-onboarding steps
