📋 Description

• Design, build, deploy, test, and maintain machine learning systems, models, classifiers, algorithms, and pipelines • Serve as a machine learning expert and provide guidance across legal, engineering, product, business development, and external affairs teams • Build automated solutions to identify child sexual abuse victims, enable removal of abusive material, and prevent online abuse • Ensure high-quality work and mentor other ML Engineers • Lead machine learning system designs, establish engineering standards, lead technical meetings, and mentor engineers • Debug, conduct code reviews, and support machine learning initiatives • Define data sourcing and labeling strategies and identify future data needs • Create data-labeling guides and support labeling efforts, potentially involving sexually explicit material • Identify cross-team dependencies and technical risks; define architectural guardrails and best practices for scalability and reliability • Represent Thorn at conferences and external forums as a technical thought leader • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, product owners, and designers to define requirements, scope, user needs, features, and deliverables • Maintain and deploy models, algorithms, and model-serving infrastructure • Improve the innovation-to-impact cycle across products, academic collaborations, and external partnerships • Build relationships and collaborate with external partners • Improve systems, author tools, and introduce policies and patterns to raise team productivity • Communicate and document problem formulation, feature/model design, training, and evaluation results to technical and non-technical audiences • Identify new problem spaces in online child safety and apply relevant technical developments • Drive roadmap planning and maintenance versus feature-development cadence • Conduct data analysis as needed • Collaborate with Product and Engineering during planning, software design, model development, and time-sensitive customer support

🎯 Requirements

• Commitment to putting the children Thorn serves at the center of everything • Willingness to learn about online child safety and victim identification • 8+ years of experience in machine learning and/or artificial intelligence • 3+ years of experience building production-scale computer vision and/or NLP machine learning systems and pipelines • Ph.D. or master’s degree in a quantitative field, or equivalent professional experience • Ability and interest in learning and adopting new technologies quickly • Ability to work with ambiguity and shifting requirements • Experience collaborating with cross-functional internal and external stakeholders • Passion for machine learning and aptitude for collaborative work • Empathy for the team and strong advocacy for users • Ability to identify unique opportunities and translate them into scalable solutions • Clear, efficient, and thoughtful communication; strong written communication • AWS • Python • Pandas • PyTorch • scikit-learn/scipy • Terraform • CI/CD Pipelines • TensorFlow with Keras • Hugging Face Transformers/Diffusers • OpenCV • FAISS or other vector stores • ONNX/onnxruntime • Kubernetes
