• Lead a team of multi-line, multi-industry production underwriters in attracting and underwriting middle market business • Drive profitable growth through new business, renewal retention, rate achievement, and exposure basis • Maintain accountability for the assigned territory and achieve profit and premium plans • Lead underwriting of complex new and renewal business through risk selection, pricing, contractual integrity, and account management • Ensure underwriting decisions comply with delegated authority and regulatory requirements • Coach and develop underwriters in technical discipline and quality standards • Assess risks, identify exposures and controls, price risks, set terms and conditions, and document underwriting rationale • Serve as a subject matter expert for complex risks • Manage portfolios and execute business plans for written premium, loss ratio, renewal retention, pricing, and expense management • Conduct in-person and virtual sales calls with agencies and insureds • Prospect for new business and develop a strong opportunity pipeline • Build relationships with producers and agencies • Collaborate with underwriting, Sales and Distribution, Underwriting Center, Underwriting Support, Risk Control, Legal, Claims, and other internal partners • Represent UFG in the marketplace and communicate its underwriting, risk control, and claims capabilities
• Four year college degree preferred • Completion of AU Designation, CIC and/or CPCU designations preferred • Leadership/management certification or educational experience preferred • 7+ years commercial lines underwriting experience preferred • Advanced risk evaluation and insurance contract knowledge • Ability to execute underwriting strategy for the assigned territory and make effective underwriting decisions • Ability to lead a team through collaboration, persuasion, vision, emotional intelligence, and talent development • Demonstrated success cultivating and maintaining business relationships with key customers • Strong leadership skills, including mentoring, coaching, and training • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while prioritizing and completing work efficiently • Excellent customer service skills • Effective stakeholder management skills and ability to establish trust with internal and external partners • Analytical and problem-solving skills with detailed accuracy • Advanced communication and negotiation skills • Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines and effective dates • Advanced knowledge of agency force and current market environment • Excellent sales skills with a proven record of growing a profitable book of business • Driver’s license and acceptable MVR required • Ability to travel within the assigned territory, including agency visits and marketing events • Willingness to work outside business hours when required
