• Line editing stories from Civic News Company’s Votebeat and Chalkbeat • Making sure stories incorporate regional or national context and are balanced, compelling, properly sourced • Ensuring that stories are precise and clear, read smoothly, and adhere to AP and Civic News style • Attending daily and weekly planning meetings • Providing editorial support to bureau chiefs and managing editors • Inputting and proofing stories in our CMS and occasionally helping with homepage curation and photo uploading • Providing one-on-one coaching and mentoring for reporters when needed
• 5+ years experience in daily journalism • Expertise in story structure, line editing, and copy editing • Experience working in a CMS • Stellar news judgment • Strong interpersonal skills with a knack for working with early career and experienced reporters and collaborating with other editors • A demonstrable interest in U.S. public education and voting rights • Bonus points if you’ve got: Deep knowledge of U.S. public education and voting rights • Journalism experience in New York, Denver, Indianapolis, Michigan, Memphis, Chicago, Newark, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin, or Texas • Fluency in Spanish
