📋 Description

• Define and maintain the target architecture of the platform with other Staff Engineers • Turn the target architecture into a clear, practical technical roadmap • Anticipate technical problems over the next 6 to 12 months and make preventative design decisions • Frame complex system-level topics including data models, service boundaries, event flows and external integrations • Make technical trade-offs explicit for Product and Engineering leadership • Write code for shared libraries, core services, migrations, performance and reliability work spanning squads • Support squads with difficult technical problems and production incidents • Set examples for testing, observability and deployment practices • Remove unnecessary technical complexity • Mentor senior and mid-level engineers • Run the backend community with chapter leads through design reviews, tech talks, workshops, guidelines and documentation • Represent JobTeaser engineering at meetups, in articles or in open source • Work with the Head of Engineering and Engineering Managers to structure technical work and staff transverse initiatives • Balance technical investment against product needs • Communicate and support technical decisions after they are made • Own transverse topics without a natural owner • Consolidate the technology stack, practices and tooling across the microservice architecture • Lead architectural explorations for complex features and integrations • Ensure architectural decisions and practices are properly documented • Animate the backend and frontend developer community • Guide monitoring, alerting and platform reliability improvements • Mentor and assist backend developers and teams on complex problems

🎯 Requirements

• 8 or more years in software engineering as a reference point • Substantial experience in a transverse or lead role spanning several teams, such as Staff, Principal, Lead or equivalent • Experience in a product company such as a SaaS, marketplace or platform • Strong backend skills in Ruby or another backend ecosystem • Distributed systems experience • Relational databases experience • Kafka experience • REST and gRPC API experience • Cloud infrastructure experience with AWS and Kubernetes • Experience building and operating business-critical systems at scale • Experience leading a large migration or architectural transition across several teams • Demonstrable improvements in stability, performance or scalability • Ability to align engineers, managers and product people without hierarchical authority • Ability to connect technical choices to user and business outcomes • Ability to explain complex topics simply in writing and conversation • Experience using LLMs and agents for personal work or in something shipped
