American Prairie is a donor-funded conservation nonprofit working to establish one of the largest nature reserves in the United States by connecting and conserving millions of acres of Montana’s Great Plains. The organization acquires and manages a patchwork of lands, restores prairie ecosystems and bison herds, collaborates with Indigenous nations, local communities, scientists, and public land managers, and provides public-facing programs—such as a National Discovery Center, field schools, webcams, and guided visitor experiences—to educate and engage people about prairie biodiversity and stewardship.

📋 Description

• Build lasting partnerships with donors who share American Prairie’s vision • Secure major gifts, including regular five- and six-figure commitments • Cultivate principal and transformational gift opportunities with philanthropy leadership and senior leadership • Qualify at least 35 new major gift prospects annually • Manage a portfolio of 80–120 major and planned gift donors and prospects • Lead relationships through qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship using moves management • Conduct in-person and virtual visits, personalized communications, events, and hosted visits to American Prairie properties • Personally solicit major and planned gift commitments, primarily $50,000 and above • Design tailored, multi-year solicitation strategies aligned with donor interests and organizational priorities • Engage senior leadership, board members, and program staff in donor cultivation and asks • Represent American Prairie and communicate its conservation work, initiatives, and Forever Wild comprehensive campaign • Develop compelling cases for support and provide high-level donor updates • Identify and qualify prospects using networks, Salesforce, wealth screening tools, and independent research • Maintain current donor records in Salesforce, including meeting dossiers, contact reports, solicitation and stewardship plans, and activity tracking • Use portfolio data for prioritization, metrics, and forecasting • Design and lead donor engagement events and intimate gatherings • Recruit, prepare, and partner with volunteer hosts • Share donor insights with Philanthropy and Marketing teams to shape messaging, proposals, collateral, and team strategies

🎯 Requirements

• Enthusiasm for American Prairie’s mission, values, goals, and culture • At least 5 years of directly related philanthropy experience focused on major and principal gifts • Record of personally securing five- and six-figure gift commitments • Experience working in a comprehensive fundraising program • Advanced skill in major gift strategy, including multi-year cultivation and solicitation planning, moves management, portfolio prioritization, and philanthropy ethics • Working knowledge of planned giving vehicles • Ability to work with board members, senior leadership, and volunteers on cultivation and solicitation • Strategic, persuasive written and verbal communication skills, poise, and strong presentation skills • Collaborative, organized, self-directed, and results-focused • Ability to manage a complex portfolio accurately with sound judgment and attention to detail • Proficiency with Salesforce or a comparable CRM • Experience using wealth screening and prospect research tools • Ability to work non-traditional and long hours • If based outside Mountain Time, availability during core hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. MT • Ability to travel approximately 15–25% of the time, roughly 40–70 days annually • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive for work travel, including in rural and remote areas • Campaign experience strongly preferred • 10+ years of major gift experience preferred • Experience in conservation, environmental, or land-based organizations preferred • Network of philanthropic relationships or familiarity with donor communities in key American Prairie markets preferred
