📋 Description

• Model biomedical knowledge for rare disease research by ingesting disease and phenotype ontologies and controlled vocabularies into PostgreSQL • Maintain release and refresh paths, reconcile identifiers across sources, and analyze term hierarchies for clinical relevance • Build retrieval-augmented services that ground everyday language in clinical concepts • Tune keyword and vector search over large biomedical corpora and manage recall/latency trade-offs • Build ranking and relevance layers with domain-aware weighting and graceful degradation • Deliver user interfaces in Next.js, React, and TypeScript, including question and confirmation flows, result presentation, and live pipeline status • Continuously deploy to NIH on-premises and high-performance computing Kubernetes environments using Helm charts, StatefulSets, secrets, ingress, GPU scheduling, and scheduled jobs • Build and maintain evaluation systems as regression suites for retrieval and concept mapping • Capture request identifiers, latency, errors, and selected concepts for review of AI-assisted results • Translate researcher, clinician, and patient-community needs into data models, retrieval behavior, and interface design • Contribute to manuscripts, conference abstracts, and posters with NIH investigators, with authorship credit • Work directly with NIH program staff, clinical geneticists, and rare disease information specialists

🎯 Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Informatics, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may be considered in place of a degree • Advanced degree preferred • At least 5 years building and operating production software or data systems • At least 2 years shipping LLM-powered applications that people depend on • Experience building retrieval systems end to end, including indexing, query construction, and retrieval-quality measurement against real data • Experience evaluating systems without a single right answer using golden sets, offline regression suites, Recall@K, or MRR • Experience with structured output and tool/function calling using typed schemas and validation • Ability to own a service end to end, from schema design through deployment and operation • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust Security clearance • Python with FastAPI, Pydantic, and pytest • PostgreSQL, including vector search, full-text search, embedding pipelines, indexing, and query tuning • LLM application engineering, including provider APIs and gateways, prompt/context design, structured generation, and tool use • Data ingestion and transformation pipelines with a repeatable refresh path • Containers and Kubernetes • Next.js, React, and TypeScript • Git-based collaboration and CI/CD
