• Support AFT’s Climate and Soil Health Program by connecting research, science translation, partnerships, and implementation strategies • Lead applied research, literature and technical reviews, data analysis, modeling, life-cycle analysis, and impact-oriented program design and implementation • Provide technical leadership for biochar and soil health fundraising efforts • Compile, analyze, and publish project data and results • Translate research findings, producer innovations, and demonstration results into decision-support tools, guides, factsheets, manuals, peer-reviewed publications, curricula, trainings, and educational resources • Strengthen producer, advisor, mentor, and peer-learning networks using scientific findings and program evaluation results • Address soil health adoption needs across diverse agricultural systems and agroecological zones through on-farm trials, technical resources, and training programs • Provide scientific leadership and subject-matter expertise for soil health, biochar, livestock, grazing, and peer-learning training programs • Collaborate on impact measurement, evaluation, and learning systems • Lead scientific work on biochar, PFAS, climate resilience, soil health systems, ecosystem services, and related innovation opportunities • Support the National Climate and Soil Health Director and team with proposals, pitches, and funder relationships; may serve as PI on future projects • Build, steward, and leverage partnerships with producers, advisors, researchers, corporate partners, funders, and other stakeholders • Co-develop applied research-to-implementation agendas addressing adoption barriers and market opportunities • Represent AFT as a thought leader in meetings, workshops, conferences, and external events • Design, refine, deliver, and scale evidence-based curricula, trainings, and peer-learning pathways • Collaborate with Programs and Communications teams on presentations, publications, websites, blog posts, press releases, social media, and other communications • Provide technical review for relevant policy recommendations, platforms, and communications • Lead and manage AFT staff and partner teams on assigned projects or workstreams • Coordinate with AFT, NRCS, ARS, ABI, federal, academic, nonprofit, industry, corporate supply chain, and other partners • Ensure high-quality deliverables, partner coordination, and progress and final funder reporting • Support a team culture of shared learning, innovation, and problem solving
• Significant scientific, technical, and applied on-farm expertise in soil health, soil function, and interactions among production systems, soils, climatic conditions, and management • Familiarity with soil systems modeling and microbial, ecological, and other soil science processes • Advanced understanding of soil health management systems implementation, biochar opportunities and challenges, environmental co-benefits, climate interactions, and technical barriers to producer adoption • Experience developing and applying models, tools, decision support resources, and technical guidance based on research and producer experience • Demonstrated success conducting independent research and quantitative analyses of complex agronomic or ecological datasets using R, SAS, or comparable statistical programming language • Proficiency in literature review, scientific information synthesis, and evaluation of emerging soil health research, technologies, and producer innovations • Strong written and verbal communication skills for inter-organizational and interdisciplinary collaboration • Demonstrated grant writing and fundraising success, including achieving peer, leadership, or donor buy-in • Success developing partnerships with researchers, farmers and ranchers, advisors, nonprofits, corporations, agricultural retailers and industry, and government agencies • Commitment to expanding access to resources and support for small, limited-resource, beginning, and other farmers facing adoption barriers • Proficient trainer, facilitator, communicator, and public speaker • Ability to develop educational materials and communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences • Ability to perform high-quality independent work under time pressure • Proven history overseeing research and/or project implementation and delivery on time and within budget • High emotional intelligence and ability to collaborate, motivate others, and achieve shared goals in remote, team-based environments • Exceptional organizational and communication skills • Commitment to shared learning, creativity, innovation, and problem solving • Degree in agronomy, soil science, agroecology, conservation, agricultural sciences, or related field • For senior level: significant large-scale, multi-regional or national scientific and implementation leadership experience, successful fundraising, and agricultural production systems expertise • For senior level: master's degree and about 10 years of work experience, or PhD degree and about 6 years of work experience • Up to 15% travel, potentially including Washington, D.C., regional offices, and elsewhere in the country • Occasional evening or weekend work may be required • Resume, cover letter, and completed screener questions required
