• Act as the engineering safety partner for the Austin site across TTE, laser, facilities, and operations teams • Assess and manage risk during design, installation, validation, commissioning, and routine operation • Lead or facilitate HAZID, FMEA, JHA, what-if reviews, and task-based risk assessments • Review system designs, changes, and experimental setups for early safety integration • Translate hazard findings into design requirements, interlocks, procedures, and operational controls • Provide hands-on safety support during installation, facility modifications, subsystem integration, validation, and commissioning • Identify and control hazards before work begins and before systems are released for operation • Develop safe operating envelopes, startup/shutdown strategies, lockout-tagout boundaries, access controls, permits, and readiness reviews • Define and track corrective actions, engineering controls, administrative controls, and procedural safeguards to closure • Develop and maintain risk assessments, safety reviews, operating constraints, work instructions, and engineering safety documentation • Coordinate with central safety leadership and Germany-based safety system definition • Participate in incident, near-miss, and abnormal-event investigations; support root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions • Provide technical safety guidance and support project-specific safety training • Support compliance with OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, and other relevant requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field • 5+ years of experience in systems safety, engineering safety, operational safety, or a closely related technical role in a high-risk or highly regulated environment • Experience performing structured hazard analyses and translating findings into engineering and operational controls • Ability to work with multidisciplinary engineering and operations teams in a fast-moving R&D, prototype, or advanced manufacturing environment • Working knowledge of low-voltage electrical, mechanical, laser, cryogenic, or process hazards • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Comfort working hands-on in an evolving technical environment • Experience with Class 3B/Class 4 laser systems, laser laboratories, or high-energy optical systems is advantageous • Experience with low-voltage industrial electrical systems, mains-fed three-phase equipment, interlocks, grounding, isolation, lockout-tagout, and safe access boundaries is advantageous • Familiarity with commissioning, startup, validation, and operational readiness processes is advantageous • Experience supporting safety in construction, facility buildout, equipment installation, or laboratory expansion projects is advantageous • Knowledge of risk assessment approaches in R&D, industrial, energy, aerospace, or complex equipment environments is advantageous • Experience with international teams or matrixed organizations is advantageous • CSP, PE, CFSE, LSO, or similar professional certification is advantageous but not required • Must meet applicable United States or Germany work-eligibility requirements as applicable
