📋 Description

• Directly manage the engineering team through 1:1s, feedback, performance management, promotions, and difficult conversations • Own delivery by planning, scoping, and shipping quality software against a roadmap • Shape product priorities, commitments, and team practices • Help engineers improve scoping, estimating, decision-making, and outcome ownership • Continue writing and shipping code to support technical decisions and difficult problem-solving • Evaluate coding agents, demonstrate effective use, and help the team apply them • Challenge architectural decisions, explain tradeoffs, and guide maintainable approaches • Hire, set expectations, provide feedback, support growth, manage promotions, and conduct exits when necessary • Remove friction, address recurring blockers, and improve AI tooling practices • Stay close to code and architecture without becoming an approval bottleneck • Lead engineering responses to customer, services-team, and open-source escalations • Involve the right people, make priority calls, and address recurring causes • Turn managed-services experience into better products rather than one-off customer fixes

🎯 Requirements

• At least a couple of years managing engineers • Experience hiring and developing people, addressing underperformance directly, and making difficult people decisions • Prior experience as a strong engineer with sound technical judgment • Ability to reason about architecture and tradeoffs beyond personal code • Continues to build software and enjoys it • Serious, effective use of coding agents, with examples • Experience shipping at a startup and making decisions with incomplete information • Ability to give specific feedback and address issues directly • Ability to balance long-term product work with customer deadlines and negotiate realistic commitments • Nice to have: experience with ML tooling, data platforms, or evaluation systems • Nice to have: experience managing a distributed team • Nice to have: frontend architecture depth
