📋 Description

• Design and build Life360’s reusable on-device inference framework, including runtime, model integration, sampling, and preprocessing pipelines • Make platform decisions covering runtime and model format, memory/flash budgets, and OTA model updates • Architect, implement, and debug the platform on devices in the field • Integrate inference into resource-constrained Zephyr or FreeRTOS firmware • Own low-level drivers, DMA data paths, SPI/I²C interfaces, and middleware • Debug real hardware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG • Drive firmware/hardware cross-layer issues to root cause • Carry regular firmware features, bug fixes, field issues, and on-call/triage work • Deploy, quantize, optimize, and validate ML models on device • Balance model accuracy, power draw, memory footprint, and latency • Align firmware, app/cloud, data science, hardware, and operations teams on on-device intelligence • Raise embedded-ML and AI-native development fluency through code reviews, design documents, and pairing • Ship 2–3 on-device ML features to the Pet GPS fleet and root-cause production issues from device logs

🎯 Requirements

• 10+ years of firmware engineering experience taking complex consumer hardware from prototype through mass production • Demonstrated track record of shipping consumer hardware at scale • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field • Deep C/C++ expertise for embedded systems • Fluency in RTOS internals, including Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or equivalent • Strong low-level hardware skills with SPI, I²C, UART, DMA, interrupts, and driver development from datasheets • Hands-on debugging with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG • Power and memory discipline in embedded systems • Demonstrated experience deploying ML models on microcontroller-class hardware in a shipping product • Hands-on experience with TFLite Micro, CMSIS-NN, ExecuTorch, or equivalent • Model optimization experience, including quantization and pruning • Ability to develop and train ML models independently • Understanding of sensor-data and signal-processing pipelines, including IMU data • Daily use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or equivalent • Critical review of AI-generated code and AI-assisted model outputs • Strong written communication and documentation across firmware, hardware, and data science • Nice to have: secure boot, key provisioning, signed and rollback-safe OTA, FCC/CE certification, cellular, BLE, GPS/GNSS, audio, new-board bring-up, schematic evaluation, manufacturing test development, and production-line support
