Founded in 2012, this organization has built a network of over 1100 local elected officials across 46 states, including mayors, district attorneys, county commissioners, city councilmembers, and school board members. Their mission focuses on empowering underrepresented communities, sharing innovative policy ideas, and reshaping governance to address challenges faced by the many, rather than just the wealthy elite. Through collaboration, they facilitate policy change at local, state, and national levels, fostering new governance models that work for diverse populations. Local Progress operates under the Center for Popular Democracy, which manages daily functions and member engagement.

📋 Description

• Develop and execute comprehensive communications campaigns using media and digital strategies • Manage day-to-day communications needs, including network-wide emails and responses to media inquiries • Support brand development • Manage Local Progress’s website and social media channels • Lead, develop, and execute communications strategies for issue-based campaigns and projects with national and state-based staff • Develop messaging frames and talking points • Draft and pitch press releases, statements, op-eds, letters to editors, and other public-facing materials • Write social media copy and create graphics for Local Progress, members, and coalition partners • Provide strategic communications guidance and media training/media preparation to Local Progress members • Disseminate network-related news, organizing opportunities, reports, policy briefs, and other resources • Grow Local Progress’s press lists and cultivate relationships with national and local reporters • Travel to in-person events up to 6 days per month • Report to the Deputy Communications Director

🎯 Requirements

• Must reside in California • 6 years of experience, including at least 3 years of communications experience in advocacy, political, or public policy-related fields • Experience developing and executing communications plans • Strong experience in media relations and social media management • Ability to keep multiple projects on track, drive projects independently, anticipate obstacles, navigate challenges, and communicate expectations and progress regularly with a remote team • Attention to detail and ability to convey and translate complex information for varied audiences and settings • Creative and proactive approach to identifying, co-conceiving, and executing communications opportunities • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Ability to build strong relationships with Local Progress members, organizational partners, and staff • Demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice • Interest in local policy, politics, and government • Proficiency with EveryAction, WordPress, and/or another content management system • Proficiency with Muck Rack or another media relations/public relations platform • Spanish language fluency and experience working with Spanish-language media (ideal candidate) • Experience with racial and economic justice issues in a local context, including education, school boards, and state preemption (ideal candidate) • Experience working on and leading state communications campaigns (ideal candidate) • Must submit a resume, cover letter, and one recent work sample • Must be eligible to work in the United States
