📋 Description

• Advance predictive ionosphere and atmosphere models for space weather forecasting affecting communications, navigation, and satellite drag • Engage with the scientific and space weather user community to identify modeling innovations beneficial to forecasters and customers • Assess and validate models and applications to establish SWPC priorities • Guide transition of high-priority models from research into space weather forecasting operations • Ensure scientific validation, documentation, and software infrastructure requirements are met • Pursue external research capabilities involving new models, observations, and innovations • Present results through internal reports, professional meetings, publications, and conferences • Manage and coordinate the ionospheric modeling group at SWPC • Coordinate model development activities across multiple agencies and guide research priorities

🎯 Requirements

• Ideally have a Ph.D. from an accredited institution in Physical Sciences, Atmospheric Science, Space Physics, Engineering, or a related field • At least five years of experience in research or operational forecasting • Thorough understanding of ionosphere and thermosphere physics and chemistry • Knowledge of space weather physical processes, including solar-wind interaction with Earth’s magnetosphere • Expertise in ionosphere and thermosphere modeling • Scientific programming skills, particularly Fortran and Python • Skills and experience in physical-model analysis and validation using satellite and ground-based data • Knowledge of and experience with the WAM-IPE model or other physics-based ionosphere-thermosphere models • Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate a small team of scientists • Ability to work in a mission-focused operational environment • Ability to think critically and make independent decisions • Ability to work well in a team • Strong written and oral communication skills • Ideally familiarity with space-weather impacts on radio communications, satellite navigation, or satellite drag • Ideally familiarity with lower-atmosphere impacts on space weather • Ideally experience with data assimilation methodology • Ideally familiarity with GitLab and Docker • Ideally experience with parallel programming/computing and high-performance computing • Ideally experience developing visualizations of scientific datasets • Lynker is an E-Verify employer
