• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers supporting the design of a novel advanced reactor • Perform thermomechanical analyses of reactor internals, including high-temperature graphite and other advanced or exotic materials • Perform engineering analyses in accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code • Conduct seismic evaluations using ASCE 7 and other applicable codes and standards • Develop physics-based mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, or electrical systems to support and verify engineering designs • Perform structural mechanics evaluations and analyses of structures, systems, and components under normal operating conditions, natural phenomena hazards, and accident conditions • Perform linear and nonlinear seismic soil-structure interaction analyses, site-response analyses, and advanced nonlinear structural evaluations • Develop models and calculations to evaluate the response of nuclear facilities and systems to seismic ground motion • Support safety analyses by simulating postulated accidents and evaluating their structural and mechanical consequences • Assist design teams with alternatives analyses, equipment selection and sizing, vendor evaluations, equipment summaries, specifications, drawings, supporting calculations, and engineering design files • Document designs through controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions, calculations, and technical reports • Verify that designs conform to established requirements and applicable codes and standards • Prepare engineering analyses and documentation in accordance with approved engineering processes and quality requirements • Apply ASME, ASCE, and other mechanical and structural codes in relation to U.S. Department of Energy requirements for safety-class systems • Provide technical leadership, peer reviews, engineering checks, and consultation to other engineers • Serve as a primary author of professional technical reports, calculations, and presentations • Advise management within assigned areas of technical expertise and represent the organization in technical discussions with project stakeholders • Support organizational business-planning and development activities when requested • Work independently and collaboratively while maintaining positive and professional relationships under demanding schedules and deadlines • Perform other duties as assigned by the Lead Reactor Project Engineer
• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a directly related field from an ABET-accredited program, plus at least eight years of relevant professional experience; or Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a directly related field from an ABET-accredited program, plus at least six years of relevant professional experience • Advanced knowledge of structural dynamics and seismic analysis • Experience with linear and nonlinear seismic soil-structure interaction analysis • Experience performing site-response analyses • Knowledge of advanced seismic probabilistic risk assessment methodologies • Knowledge of nuclear systems and advanced reactor technologies • Knowledge of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code • Knowledge of ASCE standards and other applicable mechanical and structural codes • Knowledge of engineering design techniques, tools, and principles used to produce technical plans, drawings, blueprints, models, and calculations • Ability to apply engineering principles, methods, procedures, and analytical tools to complex technical problems • Ability to develop technically sound conclusions by evaluating and combining information from multiple sources • Ability to identify existing and potential engineering problems • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team • Ability to provide constructive technical input while maintaining professionalism under pressure and tight deadlines • Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen • Satisfactory results of a pre-employment screening, including a drug and breath alcohol test and Motor Vehicle Record check • Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance • Must be available to travel to the Materials and Fuels Complex as required
