• Accurately review medical records and assign ICD-10 and CPT codes in compliance with applicable policies and regulations • Manage patient demographics, clinical documentation, and billing data across practice management systems and hospital records • Ensure proper coding and reimbursement for scheduled and unscheduled surgical cases • Abstract data in compliance with national, regional, and local policies • Interpret and review medical record documentation to assign accurate ICD-10 diagnosis and CPT procedure codes • Use the practice management system to account for demographics and services performed according to standard procedures and coding guidelines • Use individual hospital medical record systems and coordinate with physicians and staff to obtain clinical documents and demographics required for coding and billing • Provide education and support to clinical areas regarding appropriate documentation and coding of services • Maintain effective communication with providers concerning coding issues • Resolve coding edits or documentation discrepancies and escalate complex or uncertain cases • Collaborate with providers, Coding leadership, Authorization, Revenue Cycle, and other operational teams
• High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge preferred • Accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (CCS-P) or the American Academy of Professional Coders (CPC) • 3-5 years of professional medical coding experience preferred, preferably in a multi-specialty environment • Experience in orthopedics, surgery, pain management, spine, or other complex procedural coding preferred • Experience reviewing operative reports and clinical documentation • Experience assigning accurate CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and modifiers • Experience resolving coding edits or documentation discrepancies • Experience with coding audits, payer guidelines, NCCI edits, and physician queries strongly preferred • Current professional coding certification such as CPC, CCS, COC, or equivalent preferred/required based on organizational standards • Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS Level II, modifiers, NCCI edits, global surgical guidelines, and payer-specific coding requirements • Proficiency interpreting complex operative reports and selecting codes based on documented procedures • Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills • Attention to detail and commitment to coding accuracy and compliance • Effective written and verbal communication skills • Ability to communicate coding concerns, request documentation clarification, and collaborate with providers and operational teams • Ability to work independently with limited supervision • Ability to manage a consistent coding workload while meeting productivity and accuracy expectations • Ability to escalate complex or uncertain cases appropriately • Ability to recognize documentation deficiencies and identify potential compliance concerns • Ability to research unfamiliar procedures and apply coding guidelines consistently • Ability to adapt to multiple specialties and changing payer requirements • Sound judgment, accountability, organization, critical thinking, and ability to prioritize competing demands • Equal Opportunity Employer
