• Cover Americans’ changing health habits • Examine the country’s virtues and vices related to eating well, exercising, sleeping, smoking, drinking, and indulgence • Go beyond service-style analysis or debunking to examine the changing definition of a healthy life in the United States • Monitor emerging developments in health and wellness • Assess claims from experts and self-anointed experts seeking influence • Parse scientific research and report on shifting policies • Access and develop relationships with influential figures and sources • Generate and pitch story ideas • Report on pressing news and produce landmark longer-term projects • Contribute to major topics and news events
• Substantial experience reporting and writing for a broad audience on topics related to health, wellness, and/or science • Track record of developing sources, identifying emergent trends, and leading the national conversation on health topics • Fluency in scientific principles and superior ability to assess the quality of scientific research • Exceptional writing skills and magazine sensibilities • Abundance of story ideas, eagerness to pitch, and hunger to weigh in on major topics and news events • Ability to balance reporting on pressing news with landmark longer-term projects • Must be able to work nights, early mornings, and weekends at times • Successful completion of reference checks • Compliance with The Atlantic's COVID-19 vaccination policy and submission of proof of vaccination status
