• Supervise hospital or professional coding staff and assist management with day-to-day department operations • Support reimbursement, coding, abstracting, productivity, quality and education activities • Assist with implementation and facilitation of medical coding, abstracting, auditing, monitoring and physician/coder education for clinics, locations and hospitals • Ensure compliance with federal and state healthcare coding rules, regulations, administrative requirements and guidance • Maintain acceptable coding backlogs, work queues and charge lag • Act as an expert coding resource for coders, providers, revenue cycle teams, specialty groups and meetings • Manage coding personnel activities, including interviewing, hiring, coaching, counseling, discipline and performance evaluations with management • Develop and maintain coding policies, procedures and training materials • Identify budgetary needs and maintain fiscal stewardship • Conduct or oversee internal and external audits for medical record documentation, coding and billing compliance • Analyze and resolve issues affecting coding and billing • Extract, analyze and report data to management • Serve as vendor liaison and provide input on and test information systems • Assist with staff coding as needed
• High School Diploma or Equivalent • Current HIM/Coding Certification through AHIMA or AAPC • Five (5) years of medical coding experience • Associate degree or higher in Health Information Management or related field preferred • Previous clinical experience as an RN, LPN or Medical Assistant highly desirable • Extensive experience in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, MS-DRG, HCC and APR-DRG assignment; multi-specialty coding; E&M coding; procedural/surgical coding; and governmental billing and coding regulations, including Teaching Physician Guidelines • Previous supervisory or project management experience • Seven (7) years of medical coding experience preferred • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills • Knowledge of provider healthcare compliance, revenue cycle operations and auditing techniques • Ability to mentor, educate and train others • Ability to ensure quality and productivity standards • Ability to handle high-stress and critical situations calmly and professionally • Ability to maintain accuracy during constant interruptions • Independent decision-making ability • Ability to prioritize job duties and adapt to workplace changes • Organizational and time management skills • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology • Analytical and problem-solving skills • Proficiency in office software programs, medical record systems and billing systems • Ability to analyze complex data and reports • Ability to sit for long periods, with normal visual and hearing acuity and manual dexterity • Ability to lift, push or pull 10–20 pounds
