📋 Description

• Own the technical direction and architectural decisions for Canva’s hybrid mobile platform across React Native, iOS, and Android • Define what should be shared, what should remain native, and how platform layers work together • Turn the architecture into shipped production code with foundations for performance, reliability, and observability • Deliver a React Native product surface into production within six months • Establish stable capabilities and platform primitives for feature teams • Lead Staff and Senior engineers through the migration and difficult technical decisions • Work with major product teams to drive platform adoption and establish trusted engineering patterns • Influence mobile architecture decisions across more than 800 frontend engineers • Contribute hands-on to hard implementation details • Help shape how Canva runs across iOS, Android, and web

🎯 Requirements

• Production experience building or significantly evolving large-scale cross-platform mobile architecture • Experience with React Native and React, or deep experience with Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, or another production-scale cross-platform stack • Experience leading a meaningful migration of a mature mobile product while live and growing • Principal-level technical leadership across multiple teams • Organisation-wide architectural influence across multiple groups or a large engineering organisation • Hands-on technical depth and comfort with difficult implementation details • Strong engineering judgement and first-principles reasoning • Knowledge of shared-code runtimes, native boundaries, bundle delivery, and performance profiling on real devices • Deep iOS and Android fundamentals • Experience with mobile performance, reliability, crash monitoring, and optimisation at scale • Knowledge of shared capabilities, libraries, abstractions, and infrastructure used across multiple teams • Strong fundamentals in data structures, complexity, and system-level trade-offs • Nice to have: deep production experience with React Native and React internals • Nice to have: Rust or C/C++ experience • Nice to have: open-source contributions to React Native, Flutter, Kotlin Multiplatform, Expo, or the wider ecosystem • Nice to have: mobile CI/CD, release trains, and over-the-air updates at scale • Nice to have: AI tooling experience in engineering work • Please provide pronouns and any reasonable interview adjustments needed
