📋 Description

• Identify, debug, and eliminate performance bottlenecks in the dbt-core execution engine and Python codebase • Architect and implement improvements to the dbt adapter interface connecting dbt to databases and data platforms • Debug system-level issues involving Linux process management, concurrency models, database query planning, and network protocols • Lead technical design discussions and contribute to dbt Core’s long-term architectural roadmap • Make architectural decisions to ensure scalability and reliability • Mentor engineers and review open-source community contributions • Uphold standards for code quality, testing, and design • Own distributed systems and troubleshoot complex production issues • Participate in an on-call rotation to maintain high availability and a resilient platform experience

🎯 Requirements

• 6+ years of professional software development experience, with a focus on building and operating backend systems in a production environment • Deep backend engineering experience and proficiency in Python • A systematic, first-principles approach to problem-solving • Comfort navigating and debugging in Linux environments, including process scheduling, memory management, and file systems • Solid grasp of database internals, including query execution engines, storage layers, indexing strategies, and transaction management • Excellent communication skills and a sense of ownership, with the ability to balance technical depth with fast, iterative delivery • Preferred: background in data warehousing, data engineering, or analytics engineering • Preferred: professional experience writing production code in Go or Rust • Preferred: experience contributing to or maintaining a popular open-source project • Preferred: experience building compilers, interpreters, or developer tooling • Preferred: familiarity with performance analysis tools such as perf or strace
