📋 Description

• Own engineering end-to-end, including technical decisions, pace, organization, and people leadership • Work directly with the co-founder and CTO • Ship a meaningful AI feature alongside the team during the first month • Improve tooling, review, testing, work allocation, and development processes to reduce cycle time • Start regular 1:1s with engineers focused on output, quality, and AI usage • Take over engineering hiring and build a process that operates without founder oversight • Decide team organization and which lead roles to hire or develop • Run engineering organization and technical direction • Improve testing automation, code and security review, and quality practices • Own team structure, levels, performance reviews, hiring plan, managers, and tech leads • Continue building with the team periodically to maintain hands-on understanding • Drive AI adoption in engineering workflows and management processes • Grow the engineering team from 8 engineers and 2 product designers toward approximately 16 within 12 months • Maintain zero-bug standards and support rapid, high-quality delivery

🎯 Requirements

• 10+ years as a software engineer, including 6+ years leading engineering teams and 2+ years managing managers or tech leads • You've grown an engineering team to 15+ at a VC-funded startup and hired most of it yourself • You've built hiring processes, levels, performance reviews, and salary bands from scratch • You've shipped AI features to production, including retrieval, RAG, and agentic workflows • You've built and shipped with Claude Code and Cursor in real production work • Senior or principal engineering background before management; able to contribute to design reviews, debugging, or feature development • Experience building something zero to one at a startup or scaling a team through the messy middle • Able to work in European timezone (CET/CEST); EMEA-based, ideally Germany or UK • Product taste and high standards for quality • Direct feedback and difficult performance conversations • Proactive written communication in a remote team • Nice to have: engineering organization grown past 30 • Nice to have: led an engineering team through an ISO 27001 or SOC 2 audit • Nice to have: led engineering for a B2B SaaS product moving from SMB into mid-market
