📋 Description

• Rethink and redesign Whatnot's observability systems • Ensure visibility into the state, performance, reliability, and user experience of the software stack at 10x and 100x current scale • Collect, normalize, route, process, query, and visualize observability data • Use analytics engines and vendors to help predict incidents and enable swift resolution • Build a platform that identifies leading indicators before issues become problems • Handle high-volume, low-signal data and low-volume, high-signal data • Use open standards such as OpenTelemetry and Semconv • Interface with infrastructure to provide better management signals than CPU utilization • Correlate infrastructure, CI/CD, experimentation, and load-test events with logs and time-series data • Provide observability experiences for application engineers, incident responders, and leadership • Collaborate closely with Core Infrastructure, Platform, and Developer Tools teams • Build foundational systems and frameworks that help Whatnot scale while remaining stable and trustworthy

🎯 Requirements

• 7+ years of experience designing and building large-scale distributed systems • Experience in Python, Elixir, or Go is preferred; strong engineers from other backend stacks who are eager to learn are welcome • Identify as a software engineer first and want to build systems and write code • Strong understanding of observability principles, including metrics, logs, events, and traces • Strong fundamentals in designing, building, and operating shared production services and frameworks • Experience with OpenTelemetry • Experience with OLAP databases • Experience creating developer-facing tools, libraries, or frameworks • Experience with high-traffic, real-time, or event-driven systems • Comfortable in cloud-native environments such as AWS or GCP with Kubernetes and infrastructure as code • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Legally authorized to work in Poland
