📋 Description

• Manage the foundation portfolio, focusing on unrestricted and multi-year funding and maintaining partnerships for renewed and expanded support • Develop and oversee systems to identify prospects and secure new funding for AFJ/AFJ Action • Track philanthropic trends and foundation giving • Project manage and guide program leaders and staff participating in foundation relations and proposal pitches • Manage the Senior Manager, Foundation Relations and oversee their portfolio • Write and edit strategy memos, programmatic updates, donor communications, grant proposals, and reports • Oversee complete grant packages, including budgets, financial narratives, and institutional information • Lead planning and execution of meetings with foundation leaders, staff, and donor advisors • Conduct or oversee donor research and prepare written and in-person briefings • Advise AFJ/AFJ Action leadership on engagement with foundation staff • Represent AFJ/AFJ Action at meetings • Make funding asks in person and in writing • Monitor revenue projections, fundraising goals, and work plans • Prepare talking points, strategy, and background materials for AFJ leadership and the President • Collaborate with the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and supervise the Senior Manager, Foundation Relations

🎯 Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience • Advanced degree or training in law, public policy, or nonprofit advocacy is a plus • At least 10–15 years of experience in foundation and institutional fundraising, nonprofit development, and/or building similar partnerships or sponsorships • Experience related to nonprofit advocacy or judicial nominations is a plus • Demonstrated political savvy and big-picture thinking • Ability to understand and discuss AFJ/AFJ Action’s advocacy and nominations goals, activities, strategies, and political and societal landscape • Excellent writing and analytical skills • Ability to translate complex legal and policy work into clear, compelling language for funder audiences • Ability to manage tight timelines, competing deadlines, and longer-term tasks • Highly mature interpersonal skills and ability to respond productively to direction and feedback • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing supervisees while driving results • Outstanding attention to detail and accuracy • Comfort using foundation/grant submission technology platforms and portals, EveryAction, Salesforce, and other office technology • Demonstrable commitment to AFJ/AFJ Action’s mission and goals • Ability to travel domestically and work long hours when needed
