📋 Description

• Manage the growing research program to develop effective ALS treatments and improve the lives of people affected by ALS • Develop, solicit, review, and manage a portfolio of ALS research aligned with scientific and strategic goals • Develop and launch new research funding initiatives • Direct and oversee external research funding programs • Lead national ALS collaborative efforts such as the AMP ALS initiative • Participate in global initiatives launched by The International Alliance of ALS/MND and other international organizations • Lead and engage with the research committee of the board of trustees on strategy, program and project approvals, portfolio analyses, and impact reporting • Present research progress to scientific, clinical, policy, and donor audiences • Maintain current knowledge of ALS research, including research affecting caregivers and people at risk of developing ALS • Develop relationships with ALS research leaders and organizations • Attend scientific meetings and meet with awardees, collaborators, and potential donors • Plan and execute scientific workshops as needed • Build relationships with biotechnology and pharmaceutical organizations to advance ALS research and drug development • Encourage grant applications and facilitate collaborations among scientists • Supervise 1–2 research department employees, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and professional development • Report to the Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist and collaborate with mission, development, marketing, and finance departments • Travel to Association offices, territories, conferences, and other events as business needs require

🎯 Requirements

• Graduate (PhD) degree in Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Clinical Sciences, or a related medical or health profession discipline • At least 5 years of proven experience with an organization focused on scientific and medical advancements • Prior experience as a research funder or portfolio manager strongly preferred • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across internal and external teams • Proven public speaking and writing ability for multiple stakeholders, including people with serious illnesses and government, academic, and industry partners • Proven sound judgment and analytical decision-making approach • Familiarity with ALS, neuroscience, or neurodegenerative diseases preferred • Proficient computer skills, especially Microsoft Office • Experience or proficiency with accounting software, contract management systems, development software, human resource systems, inventory software, payroll systems, and project management software • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time for business purposes • Ability to supervise, hire, coach, manage performance, and support professional development of 1–2 employees • Eligible applicants must meet applicable U.S. employment eligibility requirements
