• Review complex inpatient documentation at a highly skilled and proficient level • Assign diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, and HCPCS • Ensure correct code selection according to Official Coding Guidelines and federal and insurance regulations • Use an EMR and/or computer-assisted coding software • Follow organizational and department policies and procedures • Code high-dollar and long-length-of-stay cases for all patient types • Research coding topics and issues and follow query guidelines and coding standards • Follow up to obtain clarification of inaccurate documentation • Serve as a subject matter expert to coding leaders and peers • Recommend policy and procedure modifications to align with government regulations • Maintain continuing education through webinars, CPT Assistant updates, and coding clinics • Apply AHIMA Standards of Ethical Coding and official coding guidelines • Collaborate with Clinical Documentation Improvement and Quality teams to ensure DRG alignment • Reconcile Medicare cases with working DRGs from a CDI perspective • Communicate with clinicians about disease processes to ensure accurate coding • Participate in payer audits and meetings as a coding resource • Attend clinical team meetings regarding code updates for complex specialties • Maintain patient-record confidentiality and report perceived non-compliant practices • Meet or exceed departmental quality and productivity standards and support discharged-not-final-billed processes • Perform other assigned duties
• Coding Certification issued by AAPC or AHIMA • Associate's Degree in Health Information Management or related field • Typically requires 7 years' experience inpatient coding in an acute care tertiary facility • Experience in revenue cycle processes, Clinical Documentation Improvement, research, and health information workflows • Advanced proficiency in ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding guidelines • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office, electronic mail, and electronic coding systems or applications • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills • Excellent organization, prioritization, and reading comprehension skills • Excellent analytical skills and high attention to detail • Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment and decision-making • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment • Ability to take initiative and work collaboratively • Must be able to work from an approved registered state: AL, AK, AR, AZ, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, LA, KS, KY, ME, MI, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NM, NV, OH, OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WI, WV, or WY
