• Assign accurate and timely ICD-10-CM/PCS and HCPCS/CPT codes, payment group classifications, and data abstractions for reimbursement and statistical reporting • Review and interpret inpatient, outpatient, ancillary, diagnostic, emergency medicine, and other patient records • Perform coding and abstracting to support billing, data quality, statistics, severity-of-illness, and risk-of-mortality reporting • Apply UHDDS definitions, CMS regulations, and official and internal coding guidelines • Use diagnostic reports, laboratory values, doctors’ orders, and medication forms to code patient charts • Complete daily work assignments and meet productivity and accuracy standards • Mentor newer coders and coders training in new coding disciplines • Abstract, determine, sequence, and enter diagnosis and procedure data into coding and abstracting systems • Use coding systems for communication, account holds, management questions, and queries • Review charts with Coding Management for accurate code assignment • Provide coded and abstracted information for final coding and billing within productivity expectations • Review and correct patient demographic and abstracted data received via HL7 • Calculate inpatient encounters using MS-DRG and APR-DRG groupers • Sequence CPT codes using APC grouper methodology • Submit daily productivity reports • Attend coding meetings, training sessions, seminars, and workshops • Report patient identification, account, encounter, documentation, and medical-record discrepancies • Support special coding projects • Assist with systems testing, report reconciliation, and IT project support • Work through aged coding accounts and billing-system and coding-system reports and queues
• CCS credential required • College degree in Health Information Management, completion of an AHIMA-approved certificate program, or one year of acute-care coding experience required • One year of coding experience in an acute-care setting coding inpatient, observation, emergency medicine, or same-day surgery records may substitute for education • Associate or Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Technology preferred • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS and HCPCS/CPT coding • Knowledge of UHDDS definitions, CMS regulations, and official and internal coding guidelines • Ability to code inpatient, outpatient, emergency medicine, ancillary, and diagnostic records • Ability to use coding and abstracting systems, MS-DRG, APR-DRG, and APC grouper methodologies • Ability to meet productivity and accuracy standards • Full-time availability
