📋 Description

• Cover Newark schools for Chalkbeat • Balance quick-turn news stories with enterprise and long-term projects • Hold education officials accountable • Collaborate with colleagues across Chalkbeat and external media partners • Engage with readers to identify and shape story ideas • Serve as a knowledgeable guide for diverse readers on how education systems function • Build sources and relationships in the Newark community • Represent Chalkbeat at public events • Conduct investigative and accountability reporting using public records and data

🎯 Requirements

• Five years of experience in journalism • Track record of building diverse sources in a range of environments • Expertise in investigative techniques • Experience using public records and data to find compelling stories • Breaking news metabolism and decisiveness • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion • Passion for education and Chalkbeat’s mission • Knowledge of education is a strong plus, but not required • Connections to Newark are a bonus • Data journalism experience is a bonus • Fluency in a language other than English, especially Spanish or Portuguese, is a bonus • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
