• Lead a team of engineers building and operating systems that make critical public services more effective • Supervise, coach, and develop engineers through check-ins, feedback, growth opportunities, and stretch assignments • Oversee technical delivery across 2–3 projects, monitoring progress, mitigating risks, and driving durable outcomes • Mentor staff on best practices and sound technical judgment • Create opportunities for engineers to own meaningful work with clear expectations and accountability • Address and mediate conflicts between team members • Recruit and retain engineering talent • Establish technical direction, anticipate challenges, document decisions, and explain rationale • Partner with product, design, research, and program leads on priorities and dependencies • Craft features, write automated tests, and build monitoring for quality • Ship minimal features iteratively, then harden them to scale • Own architecture and data-modeling decisions for significant production-system components • Contribute hands-on to design, implementation, and code review using AI-assisted development • Guide adoption of modern delivery practices, new technology stacks, and AI-assisted development • Produce technical documentation and learning materials for internal and external audiences • Perform other duties as assigned
• At least 7 years of experience as a software engineer, engineering manager, or equivalent, including experience managing engineering teams • Experience across multiple languages, frameworks, or technology stacks, with ability to ramp quickly into unfamiliar ones • Excellent communication, collaboration, and writing skills • Ability to manage cross-functional relationships and facilitate decision-making conversations • Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary technical teams building and operating reliable technical solutions with testing, observability, and operational rigor • Experience developing and empowering collaborative, high-performing teams and managing through ambiguity in a fast-changing environment • Familiarity applying AI and emerging technologies effectively, anticipating and mitigating risks, and experience with AI-assisted development • Experience with cloud infrastructure and Infrastructure-as-Code tooling • Experience with Agile Software Development models such as Scrum, XP, TDD, or BDD • Ability to use AI coding tools judiciously, validating and refining generated code for quality • Curiosity about emerging AI tools and commitment to using them responsibly and effectively • Deep commitment to Code for America's mission • Personal or professional experience with the social safety net or other mission-relevant government services is a bonus • Experience in government, civic technology, or digital transformation initiatives is a bonus • Experience leading matrixed, multidisciplinary teams is a bonus • Familiarity with complex, legacy, or regulated technical environments is a bonus • Must reside full-time within the United States
