• Develop and implement American Farmland Trust’s media relations strategy • Develop policies and procedures for relationships between the media and AFT • Expand understanding of AFT’s business, performance, and strategy • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key media members, particularly agriculture reporters • Serve as primary media contact and liaison between media and AFT subject experts • Lead project execution by setting priorities, defining deadlines, and coordinating across teams and external partners • Lead high-impact projects and processes supporting divisional and organizational goals • Foster internal and cross-divisional collaboration through guidance, coaching, and subject-matter expertise • Collaborate with Directors and Deputy Directors on cross-divisional efforts • Staff AFT’s president, CEO, and other spokespeople during interviews and media-related events • Identify and promote programmatic and operational initiatives that drive growth and improve effectiveness • Lead execution of National Communications strategy for divisional priorities • Oversee written and multimedia communications conveying priorities, programs, and impact • Partner with the National Communications team to align internal and external messaging • Develop and oversee press materials highlighting AFT initiatives, research, events, and newsworthy developments • Develop and secure placement of op-eds, opinion pieces, and thought leadership content • Draft, edit, and provide strategic guidance on executive and organizational communications • Write talking points, FAQs, briefing materials, and communications resources • Develop proactive media outreach strategies and pursue reporter coverage opportunities • Supervise the Media Relations Associate
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, prioritize competing demands, and make timely, strategic decisions • Proven ability to respond effectively and professionally to media inquiries, including time-sensitive requests and reporter deadlines • Demonstrated ability to translate complex, technical, or academic topics into clear, compelling, concise, and on-message communications for media • Strong knowledge of media relations principles and best practices • Proficiency with Meltwater and other relevant communications and public relations tools • Interest in agriculture, conservation, and related policy issues • Commitment to American Farmland Trust’s mission • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, partners, and media contacts across the country • Advanced degree (master’s degree in business administration, marketing, communications, or a related field) and 10+ years of progressively responsible media relations experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience • Occasional work in the evenings or on weekends may be required to meet deadlines • Occasional domestic travel is required • Must submit a resume, answer all screener questions, and include a cover letter explaining fit for AFT and the role
