📋 Description

• Design and build APIs, including specifications, endpoints, data models, and REST and GraphQL protocols • Write production-grade Ruby on Rails code for core services • Manage API versioning and preserve backward compatibility • Implement enhancements based on stakeholder and consumer feedback • Conduct code reviews with the technical lead • Write and maintain RSpec test coverage • Implement authentication, authorization, encryption, and other security best practices • Support the program's continuous Authority to Operate posture and compliance obligations • Integrate APIs with internal VA systems, external applications, and third-party services • Partner with engineering leadership and the API architect on solution designs • Monitor and optimize API performance, reliability, and scalability • Participate in Tier 1 and Tier 2 on-call operations • Troubleshoot production issues through root cause and resolution • Create and maintain API documentation • Promote effective use of AI-enabled tools across the API development lifecycle • Work in an Agile delivery environment with product, engineering, and VA stakeholders

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of strong, hands-on Ruby on Rails development experience • Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL • Experience with the RSpec testing framework • Strong experience designing, building, and maintaining APIs that other teams and systems depend on • Ability to provide technical leadership to engineering teammates while remaining hands-on with development • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain technical decisions to non-engineers • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience • Proficiency in Ruby and Ruby on Rails • REST and GraphQL API design and implementation • PostgreSQL or MySQL, including schema design and query performance • RSpec and test-driven development practices • Git version control and pull-request-based workflows • Authentication and authorization patterns, including OAuth • Comfortable using AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot for code generation, refactoring, test writing, and documentation • Able to set an example for the team on where AI tools help and where they do not • Public Trust Clearance or higher (ability to obtain and maintain, required background check) • Preferred: Experience with asynchronous job processing, Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, application security, Java and Spring Boot, AWS, Department of Veterans Affairs or Federal agencies, cATO or similar Federal compliance models, and complex multi-vendor Federal programs
