📋 Description

• Provide basic breastfeeding education, support, and encouragement to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC participants • Provide telephone counseling and scheduled contacts to assigned participants • Educate mothers on breastfeeding benefits, common barriers, and management of common breastfeeding concerns • Be available outside usual clinic hours for calls or text messages from breastfeeding mothers • Refer participants to the WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert, CPA, or other health/social service agencies as appropriate • Maintain accurate records of contacts and complete required reports • Assist WIC staff with breastfeeding promotion, special projects, and outreach activities • Support Spanish-speaking WIC participants and provide Spanish-language assistance or translation support to WIC staff • Read assigned breastfeeding books and materials and remain current on breastfeeding topics • Learn and follow agency policies, practices, and procedures • Establish effective working relationships with staff, management, and community contacts • Attend monthly meetings with the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Coordinator and scheduled group meetings/conferences • Complete local agency, WIC Breastfeeding Curriculum, WIC data system, and ongoing required training • Adapt to changing organizational needs and keep the work area neat and clean • Maintain cell phone, laptop, and other agency-issued equipment

🎯 Requirements

• Personal experience with breastfeeding at least one baby for a minimum of 6 months • Must be a current or previous breastfeeding WIC participant • Must be a paraprofessional without extended professional training in health, nutrition, or clinic management of breastfeeding • Ability to work well with a diverse population of low-income individuals with possible language/cultural barriers • Maintain confidentiality at all times • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly • Valid driver’s license, insurance, and reliable transportation • Maintain a good driving record • Pass a Motor Vehicle Records check before hire and annually thereafter • Pass a Department of Human Services Criminal History and Request for Child Abuse Information Records check before hire and every two years thereafter • Local travel required • Good communication and basic computer skills • Maintain agency-issued equipment in good working condition • Spanish-language assistance or translation capability/support for Spanish-speaking WIC participants
