• Abstract primary sites for analytic and non-analytic cases into NF-KACI Oncology software using pathology reports, ARIA, EPIC, and ModMed Dermatology • Apply defensive abstracting techniques and approved edits software to ensure error-free submissions to the New York State Cancer Registry and NCDB • Abstract comprehensive datasets and RCRS cases, identify reportable cases, and run computerized case-finding programs • Review and analyze hospital, computerized, and medical reports to classify demographics, primary site, histology, stage, and treatment • Use AJCC, TNM, ICD-O, SEER, SSDI, Hematopoietic Database, SEER*Rx, Solid Tumor Rules, and other relevant coding and staging manuals • Update post-abstraction treatment information and code recurrence patterns, recurrent disease, subsequent treatment, and cause of death • Participate in quality review, department projects, virtual cancer conferences, and department meetings • Abstract patients discussed at cancer conferences and prepare discussion synopses • Use Windows applications and Information Systems for data input, analysis, and retrieval • Research and prepare lifelong follow-up histories documenting disease status, condition, and treatment • Contact physicians, hospitals, and other health institutions by telephone, email, and fax to obtain follow-up information • Use internet resources including the Social Security Death Index, telephone directories, and newspaper obituaries for patient follow-up • Provide presentations when requested and perform other related duties as assigned
• High School diploma or GED required • Current Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification through NCRA required, or eligibility through an approved pathway with ability to obtain certification within 3 years of initial employment • Route 1: Completion of an NCRA-accredited Associate Degree Program in Cancer Registry Management, including required practicum activities and competency assessments • Route 2: Associate degree or minimum 60 college-level credits, plus completion of an NCRA-accredited Certificate Program in Cancer Registry Management, including required practicum activities and competency assessments • Route 3: Associate degree or minimum 60 college-level credits, including at least two semesters/six credit hours of Human Anatomy and Human Physiology with a grade of C or higher, plus minimum 1,950 hours/equivalent to one year full-time cancer registry experience • Thorough knowledge of Commission on Cancer standards, state cancer registry reporting requirements, and RCRS guidelines • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology • Experience using computerized systems for data abstraction, data entry, analysis, and report preparation • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint • Ability to use internet-based applications and electronic reporting systems • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Ability to meet deadlines and prioritize work • Strong decision-making and judgment skills • Ability to work independently and autonomously • Medical terminology language proficiency • Ability to multitask several projects • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks
