• Abstract and assign valid CPT, ICD-10, HCPCs, and modifiers from service documentation into billing systems • Ensure coding compliance with federal, state, private health plans, organizational, and regulatory guidance • Identify and communicate deficiencies affecting the billing process • Complete coding work queues or reports in a timely manner • Identify coding, documentation, and billing trends and educational opportunities • Review and resolve denials • Ensure documentation meets current EM Guidelines for Providers • Ensure compliance with CMS Teaching Physician Rules and UofL Health policies before billing • Ensure Advanced Practice Provider documentation meets payer-specific rules before billing • Provide comments and suggestions on weak areas identified in coding reviews • Report trending deficiencies to the Senior Manager and Compliance Educator • Assist the Coder Lead or Supervisor with staff training and mentoring • Communicate with providers, practice management, office managers, departments, and stakeholders • Meet or exceed coding production and quality standards and monthly goals • Participate in special projects and complete assigned duties • Maintain compliance with coding rules, company policies, HIPAA privacy and security requirements • Respond to questions from managers, providers, departments, and representatives • Work collaboratively and provide customer service to physicians, patients, residents, visitors, staff, and the broader healthcare community
• High school diploma or GED/equivalent (required) • Three (3) years of coding experience (required) • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) accredited by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) (required) • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Coding Specialists Based (CCS-P) accredited by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) (required) • Advanced knowledge of medical codes involving ICD 10, CPT, HCPC, and IHS coding conventions • Understands and applies regulatory changes and stays current with coding updates, including NCCI and MUE edits • Advanced working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, disease process and medical terminology • Advanced knowledge of official coding conventions and rules established by the AMA and CMS • Ability to work independently with little oversight • Effective professional communication skills; proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and composition • Ability to solve practical problems and interpret written, oral, diagram, or schedule instructions • Proficient with Microsoft, Google Chrome, Internet navigation, and database management • Able to adapt to new technologies • Previous Electronic Health Record experience preferred
