📋 Description

• Review moderate to minimally complex medical records and assign appropriate ICD-10-CM diagnoses • Abstract pertinent data for claims processing, data retrieval, and analysis • Identify diagnoses to be coded and ensure conditions are properly documented, ordered, and sequenced • Use the encoder to assign ICD-10-CM codes according to official and hospital-specific guidelines • Verify medical necessity criteria using encoder edits and CMS policies • Resolve potential medical necessity denials by reviewing physician documentation and electronic-record orders • Verify charges in Cerner for timeliness and accuracy • Communicate charge problems to the appropriate department manager or designee • Monitor the Prebill report and complete coding in a timely manner • Participate in coding education and training • Maintain coding credentials through continuing education provided by CGHMC

🎯 Requirements

• CPC, CPC-A, CCS, CCS-P, or CCA credential required • If CPC or CPC-A certified, AHIMA CCA credential required within 2 years of hire • CCS or CCS-P required within 2 years of hire for advancement to Inpatient Coding Specialist or Outpatient Coding II Specialist positions • Coding experience in a medical center preferred • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements, APCs, modifiers, and accounts receivable preferred • Basic PC and PC maintenance skills required • Adhere to the Standards of Ethical Coding established by the American Health Information Association • Follow official coding and reporting guidelines, Coding Clinic guidelines, Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set Guidelines, CMS policies, and hospital-specific guidelines • Maintain coding credential through continuing education provided by CGHMC • Work Monday through Friday, days; 40 scheduled hours weekly
