📋 Description

• Direct the ELCA Indigenous Ministries program through the Service and Justice unit • Provide voice for Indigenous communities in the ELCA and respond to their needs • Develop and implement strategic engagements with AIAN Tribal Nations in the United States and along its border • Partner and collaborate with the American Indian Alaska Native Lutheran Association and ministry personnel • Provide personnel management consulting • Administer budgets and grants • Monitor and evaluate programs and grants to AIAN ministries • Foster and facilitate ELCA relationships with AIAN ministries, agencies, institutions, Tribal Nations, Tribal Governments, ecumenical colleagues, synods, and congregations • Plan and coordinate with Service and Justice teams on advocacy, World Hunger, and Lutheran Disaster Response • Represent the ELCA Service and Justice unit at ecumenical tables • Support the ELCA Truth & Healing Movement and action teams implementing activities related to the Repudiation of the Doctrine of Discovery • Work with Strategic Communications to tell stories of Indigenous people and issues • Provide pastoral care and support the well-being of AIAN ministry colleagues • Participate in candidate evaluation and appointments to AIAN ministry Calls • Advise colleagues on African Descent and African Nationals ministries, grant applications, and ministry reviews • Participate in budget planning and propose programs for extra-budgetary financial support • Analyze regional political, social, religious, and security developments and provide resources on AIAN community issues • Work with the Witness in Society team and Repudiation Advocacy Team on federal and state advocacy needs • Collaborate with Ministries of Diverse Cultures and Communities colleagues • Cooperate with ELCA synods, congregations, units, and teams on common mission programs and activities • Travel domestically by plane and car to visit ministries and attend events and conferences

🎯 Requirements

• 7+ years of experience leading ministry, non-profit, program management, strategic planning, program planning and implementation, and work with and among indigenous communities • Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience • Master's degree or equivalent, M. Div./MTh preferred • Extensive coursework, knowledge and ability to articulate understandings of mission, particularly accompaniment as a lens and methodology for Indigenous ministries • Official federally recognized enrolled tribal member or official State recognized enrolled Tribal member preferred • ELCA rostered minister or lay leader preferred • Collaborative work style and collaborative decision-making skills • Facility in building and maintaining relationships with AIAN Tribal Nations and Tribal Governments, Inter-Tribal programs, ecumenical colleagues, ELCA synods and congregations, and inter-faith relationships • Demonstrated competencies in intercultural ministry • Knowledge and commitment to the global mission of the ELCA • In-depth knowledge and appreciation for values, customs, and decision-making processes in American Indian and Alaska Native cultures specific to the region • Skills in strategic planning, program implementation, project management and evaluation, and budgeting • Ability to meet tight work deadlines while maintaining demanding travel schedules • Ability to maintain high volume of e-communication in a timely manner • Effective verbal, written, and listening skills • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and anti-racism • Computer knowledge enabling operation of a Windows computer and basic troubleshooting • Software skills to efficiently use computer programs and applications • Ability to understand new software, follow processes, and identify opportunities for improvement • Microsoft Office applications experience preferred • Candidates must reside within the fifty United States or the District of Columbia • Must be authorized to work lawfully in the United States • Valid driver’s license preferred
