• Support various archaeological field projects across the Mid-Atlantic region • Identify, excavate, and record potential archaeological sites • Wash and/or process artifacts for laboratory analysis • Assist with laboratory tasks associated with post-field activities • Excavate, screen, and collect archaeological materials according to state and federal standards • Identify and record archaeological features and structures • Document and map survey areas, testing locations, excavations, and cultural resources • Complete paper and electronic field forms • Record soil color and type using a Munsell soil chart • Use a compass for basic orienteering • Manually remove brush and vegetation when necessary • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and hike over rugged terrain • Maintain client confidentiality and follow GAI, client, and OSHA health and safety policies • Manage personal tasks and adhere to deadlines and project scope • Coach or mentor less experienced staff and potentially lead a small crew • Stay on budget and schedule and discuss technician performance with managers • Convey field results clearly to senior cultural resources staff
• A.A. or B.A./B.S. Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Historic Preservation, American Studies, or associated degree; enrolled in field school; or equivalent skills and experience • Associates or better in Anthropology or related field • 2-3 years of archaeological field experience • Minimum 1 to 3 years CRM experience in North America preferred • Experience in archaeological field excavation techniques, artifact identification, data recording, mapping, and surveying • Basic knowledge of soils • Accurate note taking and completion of field forms • Sketch maps, basic photography, and basic compass/navigation skills • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Willingness to travel, including up to 100% during weekdays and occasional weekend travel/work • Independent means of transportation preferred • Required driver's license • Ability to work outdoors in varying and extreme weather conditions • Ability to hike off-trail and over rugged terrain while carrying tools and equipment • Ability to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 40 lbs and carry up to 25 lbs of gear • Ability to extensively dig, shovel, screen soils, and manually clear brush/vegetation • Must possess steel-toed shoes • Ability to work with or without a supervisor and take direction from a leader
