📋 Description

• Set technical direction for a platform area by defining target architecture and the path to it • Own outcomes across team boundaries for a domain rather than a backlog • Lead consolidation and migration work across customer-facing systems with backward compatibility and rollback plans • Make build-versus-buy, performance-versus-complexity, and prioritization trade-offs • Automate provisioning, configuration, and maintenance operations • Design system interfaces and architecture for other teams to build against • Identify and frame unarticulated technical and operational problems • Reduce ambiguity by turning important problems into executable work for multiple teams • Act as an escalation point for difficult or urgent issues • Partner with Engineering Managers and Product on roadmap, sequencing, and feasibility • Raise engineering standards through reviews, architecture discussions, and example • Mentor Senior engineers and reduce personal dependency over time • Write design documents, RFCs, and post-incident write-ups • Work across managed WordPress, WooCommerce, and Magento hosting infrastructure or the WordPress product portfolio • Diagnose performance issues across query plans, object caching, PHP-FPM worker pools, and application code

🎯 Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience • Deep professional PHP experience and mastery of modern PHP 8.x • Object-oriented design, dependency injection, Composer, autoloading, PSR standards, and static analysis • Demonstrated technical leadership across multiple teams • Deep WordPress expertise, including hooks and filters, REST API, WP-CLI, plugin architecture, and upgrade-safe code • Strong Linux operating-system knowledge, including process and service management, systemd, filesystems, permissions, networking, and system-load analysis • Working shell scripting and automation experience; ability to write Bash for deployments, migrations, and diagnostics • Familiarity with nginx or Apache, PHP-FPM tuning, MySQL or MariaDB query performance, and Redis or Memcached object caching • Led a migration, consolidation, or platform rewrite with backward compatibility, phased rollout, and rollback planning • Ability to reason about cost, reliability, and operational burden • Automated testing experience with PHPUnit, Codeception, wp-browser, or equivalent • Excellent written communication • A Computer Science or related degree is welcome; equivalent practical experience is equally welcome • Preferred: React, Block Editor and @wordpress/* ecosystem, WooCommerce at scale, Magento or Adobe Commerce, Ansible or comparable configuration-management tools, observability/APM tools, Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools, containers, CI/CD, multi-tenant architecture, capacity planning, WCAG 2.1 AA, WAI-ARIA, and open-source contributions • Ability to maintain at least four hours of daily overlap with US Eastern time, approximately 9:00 AM–1:00 PM ET • Must be legally engageable in the hiring location
