📋 Description

• Report to the Head of Engineering • Design, build, and own critical backend services, APIs, data pipelines, async workers, and supporting infrastructure • Make architectural decisions and document trade-offs • Drive platform and reliability investments alongside feature work • Establish standards for code quality, test coverage, and operational excellence • Diagnose and resolve performance, reliability, and scalability issues; conduct post-mortems • Design and maintain resilient distributed systems using circuit breakers, retries, idempotency, and rate limiting • Own services from design through deployment, including CI/CD, Docker/Kubernetes, and cloud infrastructure • Implement observability through structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and alerting • Contribute to infrastructure-as-code and cloud cost optimization • Design data models across relational and non-relational databases • Build data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, and third-party integrations • Apply CDN, in-memory, and application-level caching strategies • Build decoupled asynchronous architectures with Kafka, SQS, or RabbitMQ • Apply secure coding practices and contribute to SOC 2/GDPR compliance efforts • Unblock teammates and provide technical direction • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through reviews, pairing, and feedback • Write architecture decision records and technical documentation • Partner with Product and Design to scope and deliver work • Represent Engineering in cross-functional conversations

🎯 Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in backend systems • Strong command of at least one backend language: Python, Go, Java, Rust, or similar • Comfort working across AWS, GCP, or Azure • Hands-on experience with relational databases, including schema design, query optimization, and indexing • Familiarity with non-relational databases or caching layers • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines • Ability to own and deliver complex, ambiguous projects end-to-end with minimal supervision • Track record of mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction without formal authority • Clear, direct communication • Experience in a startup environment (nice to have) • Experience with Node.js/TypeScript, AWS Lambda/CDK/Step Functions, PostgreSQL, or Cloudflare (nice to have) • Familiarity with OAuth and observability tooling (nice to have) • Experience with Temporal, Airflow, Prefect, and async job processing at scale (nice to have) • Working knowledge of Terraform, Pulumi, and cloud cost management (nice to have) • Legally authorized to work in the United States • Must answer whether employment visa sponsorship will be required
