📋 Description

• Set and communicate architectural direction for key areas of Retail Point of Sale • Ensure systems supporting new POS capabilities are well-designed, secure, scalable, observable, and resilient • Help teams design reliable checkout, hardware, network connectivity, payments, sales, inventory, and order workflows • Lead architectural deep-dives and identify opportunities to simplify systems, reduce duplication, improve performance, and lower operational risk • Drive improvements in reliability, availability, latency, and recovery • Identify recurring incidents, customer pain, and non-project overhead, then create practical plans to address them • Establish and evolve engineering practices across design, testing, deployment, observability, incident management, and technical decision-making • Partner with Product, Design, Support, and engineering leaders to turn ambiguous problems into technical direction • Mentor senior engineers and technical leaders • Create cross-team alignment without relying on formal authority • Contribute across the wider Retail Engineering organization • Shape the architecture and technical direction of Lightspeed’s Retail Point of Sale experience

🎯 Requirements

• Significant experience designing and building business-critical software systems in production • Track record of technical leadership across multiple teams or a broad product area • Experience shaping architecture across a large, evolving system with meaningful scale and operational complexity • Experience building and operating cloud-based systems with strong expectations for reliability, security, and performance • History of delivering important outcomes under challenging timelines and incomplete information • Strong systems-thinking skills • Experience across more than one technology stack or technical layer, including backend services, web and mobile clients, data stores, APIs, event-driven systems, and infrastructure • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills • Judgment to moderate technical conversations, navigate disagreement, and move groups toward decisions • Hands-on approach, including prototyping, design reviews, and direct contribution when needed • English fluency as a working language is required • Experience with point-of-sale, commerce, ecommerce, payments, inventory, or transaction-heavy systems is an asset but not required • Experience with distributed systems, offline-capable software, multi-region systems, or high-availability platforms is an asset but not required • Experience with hardware integrations, payment terminals, peripherals, or unreliable network environments is an asset but not required • Understanding of domain-driven design, event-driven architecture, data consistency, and migration strategies is an asset but not required • Experience modernizing large or legacy systems incrementally is an asset but not required • Experience leading technical work across web, backend, mobile, and platform teams is an asset but not required • Experience with people management or formal technical leadership responsibilities is an asset but not required • Criminal record check as part of the hiring process • Legal eligibility to work in Canada and visa sponsorship status may be required by the application process
