📋 Description

• Review clinical documentation and assign diagnostic and procedural codes for outpatient, ambulatory, emergency, observation, day surgery, and other applicable encounters • Abstract coded information into IHS RPMS and the Patient Care Component (PCC) • Apply ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS Level II, E/M, and NCCI guidelines • Prioritize Medicare and Medicaid All-Inclusive Rate encounters and claims approaching timely filing deadlines • Review records for completeness, accuracy, medical necessity, and reimbursement/regulatory compliance • Identify documentation discrepancies and communicate with providers and staff to obtain clarification • Resolve incomplete or delinquent records and coding-related system or documentation issues • Assist with coding audits, compliance reviews, reimbursement-denial analysis, and performance improvement • Maintain coding statistics, deficiency information, error reports, and required documentation • Collaborate with clinical, Health Information Management, and Business Office staff while managing daily workload independently • Maintain productivity and quality standards with limited day-to-day supervision • Code approximately 1,250 patient encounters per month, or available volume • Maintain at least a 95% coding accuracy rate • Work aged backlog encounters according to IHS priorities, timely filing, and AIR requirements • Communicate consistently about uncodable records, documentation deficiencies, system issues, and productivity barriers

🎯 Requirements

• Current coding credential in good standing, such as CCS, CCS-P, CPC, COC, RHIT, or RHIA • Minimum of three years of production outpatient and ambulatory medical coding experience • Demonstrated experience working with the Indian Health Service (IHS), RPMS, and PCC • Working knowledge of IHS Medicare and Medicaid All-Inclusive Rate reimbursement requirements • Current knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, HCPCS Level II, E/M guidelines, and NCCI requirements • Strong analytical, documentation-review, and problem-solving skills • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically across clinical, administrative, and operational teams • Ability to work independently, organize competing priorities, meet production expectations, and manage time effectively in a remote environment • Must be dependable, responsive, and comfortable taking initiative to resolve coding and documentation issues • Must successfully complete the required IHS personnel security and suitability determination before beginning work • Must comply with applicable IHS privacy, security, confidentiality, and training requirements • High-speed internet access and a dedicated, securable work area • Video-ready during all duty hours, with video on for calls, meetings, and conversations • Final candidates must provide documentation for identity proofing, fingerprinting, background investigation, residence history, employment verification, professional certification and training, and other required security/access processing
