📋 Description

• Lead the new Animal Movement Foundations Team within Rethink Priorities’ Animal Welfare Department • Work with the Director to set team strategy, project priorities, impact measurement, and impact-maximization approaches • Manage consulting intake by accepting, reshaping, or declining requests from funders, advocacy organizations, and entrepreneurs • Identify high-upside research and other intervention opportunities • Set an agenda of priority research projects • Decide whether RP should run interventions such as regranting or talent programs and launch approved initiatives • Oversee the annual Animal Advocacy Strategy Forum, including its agenda, participants, decisions, and impact • Build project prioritization, impact measurement, and intake systems alongside the Director • Determine future team skill needs and lead hiring with support from RP’s recruitment specialist • Manage economists and specialists, set quality standards, and establish research processes, review standards, and project tracking • Scope client decisions and manage staff to deliver research on deadline • Follow up on whether clients acted on research findings • Represent Rethink Priorities by building networks and relationships that generate new projects • Attend conferences where able to travel • Raise additional funds with support from the Development Team • Report to Sam Hilton, Acting Director of the Animal Welfare Department • Work on consulting, in-house research, and activities supporting the animal advocacy movement

🎯 Requirements

• Driven to have as much impact for animals as possible • Committed to integrity in research, following evidence, and transparency about findings • Experience conducting or overseeing research aimed at informing or influencing a specific stakeholder’s decision • Demonstrated judgment in prioritization and decision-making under uncertainty • Experience managing or mentoring others, including people with deeper expertise, or clear readiness to enter people management • Experience setting team strategy and building processes where none existed, or clear ability to do so • Ability to interrogate qualitative and quantitative analysis produced by others • Ability to think at the margin about cost-effectiveness • Excellent reasoning transparency • Ability to synthesize complex information and communicate strategic insight in writing and in person • Track record of completing projects on deadline involving other people • Ability to work autonomously in a remote, asynchronous, international environment • Professional-level English required • All application materials must be submitted in English • Availability for some meetings between 3pm and 5pm UK time on most weekdays • Full-time or part-time availability of at least 24 hours per week; 30+ hours preferred • Desirable: consulting or client-facing analytical experience • Desirable: professional or voluntary animal advocacy experience • Desirable: relevant expertise in economics, policy and regulation, M&E, or animal science • Desirable: events and convening experience • Desirable: talent development experience • Desirable: grantmaking experience • Two to three professional references required
