One recent project that I successfully led was the implementation of a new client database for our law firm. The project involved migrating all client data from our old system to the new one, training staff on how to use the new system, and ensuring that it was fully functional and secure.

  1. First, I established a project team consisting of staff members from various departments, including IT, client services, and administration. This ensured that all perspectives were taken into account during the project.

Being an effective legal counsel in international law requires a combination of various qualities. I consider the following three qualities as the most important:

  1. Strong Analytical Skills: An effective legal counsel must have strong analytical skills to understand complex international laws and regulations, as well as the implications of business decisions. I possess exceptional analytical skills, which helped me successfully navigate complex international litigation and arbitration cases, which resulted in an average win rate of 80%.
  2. Communication Skills: An effective legal counsel must have excellent communication skills to communicate with clients, legal teams, and stakeholders from various countries and cultures. I have extensive experience communicating legal matters to non-legal stakeholders in a clear, concise, and effective manner, which helped avoid legal disputes and reduce expenses.
  3. Cross-Cultural Competence: An effective legal counsel must have cross-cultural competence to understand and navigate cultural differences and nuances, which impact legal decisions. I am fluent in English, French, and Spanish languages and continued to self study other cultures like Japanese, Chinese and Indian. I have consistently navigated complex legal matters in different countries and cultures, which resulted in an average 70% reduction in legal disputes.

These qualities have helped me to deliver exceptional legal services for businesses in various industries, achieve legal objectives cost-effectively, and reduce legal disputes.

6. What strategies do you use to keep up with developments in international law?

I believe it's crucial to stay up-to-date with developments in international law, and I have developed several strategies to ensure I do so.

  1. I subscribe to a range of legal newsletters and online publications that cover international law. For example, I regularly read the International Journal of Law and International Relations and the International Business Law Journal. I find this helps me to stay on top of new legal developments and changes to legislation.

  2. I attend legal conferences and seminars, both domestically and internationally, to keep current with new legal developments in the field. I recently attended the International Bar Association's Annual Conference in Europe which allowed me to connect with international legal practitioners, learn from experts and broaden my understanding of global market trends.

  3. I regularly participate in online webinars, workshops and courses that relate to international law updates. For example, I recently took a course on International Economic Law to get a deeper understanding of how countries' trade policies impact each other.

  4. I also network with other legal professionals active within the international law field to exchange information and insights with them, while learning from their experience. In 2023, I was able to expand my legal network via LinkedIn meetups, which focuses on HR Compliance and International Business Law.

Implementing these strategies has allowed me to have a broad-based understanding of the latest, most recent legal trends and developments that I can apply to tailor fitting business, organizations or companies.

7. How do you ensure that clients are compliant with international laws and regulations in their operations?

Ensuring that clients are compliant with international laws and regulations in their operations is a critical task for an International Counsel, and it requires a robust and proactive approach. To achieve compliance, I use a combination of strategies:

  1. Conducting regular assessments: I schedule regular assessments of the client's operations to identify any potential areas of non-compliance. By reviewing a client's policies, procedures, and business practices, I can identify any risks they might face and offer recommendations for mitigating them. For example, in my last job, I conducted regular assessments for a pharmaceutical company that operated in several countries. Through my assessments, I identified a gap in their data privacy policies, which I helped them to address through the implementation of new policies and training for their employees.

  2. Keeping up-to-date with changes in international laws and regulations: Staying informed about changes in laws and regulations is essential to ensuring compliance. I subscribe to industry newsletters and attend conferences and seminars to stay current on any changes that might impact my client's business. For example, in my last job, I helped a tech company to prepare for the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by conducting workshops with their employees to educate them on the new requirements.

  3. Providing ongoing training: I provide ongoing training to my clients to ensure their employees stay up-to-date with changes in laws and regulations. For example, in my last job, I created an e-learning program for a logistics company's employees to train them on trade compliance. After implementing the program, the company reported a 20% decrease in compliance-related incidents.

Overall, I believe in taking a proactive approach to international compliance, and I am committed to ensuring that my clients operate within the bounds of the law while achieving their business objectives.

8. What is your experience with cross-border litigation and arbitration?

During my time at my previous firm, I had the opportunity to work on a cross-border litigation case for a multinational corporation. The case was brought against the corporation in multiple jurisdictions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan.

  1. First, I had to thoroughly research and analyze the laws and procedures of each jurisdiction to ensure our defense was in compliance with each country's legal requirements. This involved familiarizing myself with the local legal culture, statutes, and precedents of each country.
  2. Next, I worked closely with local counsel in each jurisdiction to develop a case strategy that would effectively defend our client's interests in each court.
  3. One of the main challenges we faced was coordinating the efforts of multiple legal teams across time zones and continents. To overcome this, I helped organize regular conference calls and video meetings to keep everyone up-to-date on the case's progress.
  4. Through our rigorous preparation and coordinated efforts, we successfully defended our client in each jurisdiction. Not only did we avoid significant financial penalties, but we were also able to successfully counter-sue in one jurisdiction and secure a favorable financial settlement for our client.

This experience taught me the importance of cross-border collaboration and coordination when working on international cases. Additionally, it reinforced my passion for complex litigation and arbitration, and I'm excited to bring that experience and skillset to your team.

9. What are your top three expectations from a legal team that you lead?

As a legal team leader, my top three expectations from my team are:

  1. Accuracy and efficiency in documentation:

    • My team should ensure that all legal documents are accurate and error-free, with no room for ambiguity.
    • My team should be able to handle high volume tasks quickly and efficiently. At my previous job, I led a team that increased the number of legal documents processed by 25% and reduced turnaround time by 20%.
  2. Proactivity and adaptability when facing new situations:

    • My team should always think ahead and anticipate potential legal issues. I want my team to inform me of any risk, and offer proactive solutions.
    • Also, there is no room for complacency. They should be adaptive and able to handle unexpected situations. And, in order to that, I encourage my team to ask questions, offer feedback and take ownership of their work.
  3. Collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders:

    • I encourage my team to work closely and collaborate with others in the company. As a former General Counsel, I know firsthand the value of involving stakeholders (including c-level executives) in legal processes, from start to finish.
    • Additionally, it is highly important that they communicate effectively and diplomatically both internally and with external partners.
At my last role, I led a team that was able to negotiate a $5M settlement, while preserving our relationship with the partner.

10. How do you assess risks for international business operations?

As an International Counsel, one of the key responsibilities is assessing risks for international business operations. My approach to this task consists of four key steps:

  1. Identification of potential risks: I research the various factors that could impact the operations and identify potential risks. This includes analyzing factors such as socio-political stability, economic conditions, legal requirements, cultural differences, and technological risks.
  2. Assessing the probability of the risk occurring: Once potential risks have been identified, I assess the likelihood of them occurring. To achieve this, I use both qualitative and quantitative analyses to determine the probability of these risks occurring. This includes assessing statistical data, conducting industry research, and performing cost-benefit analysis.
  3. Evaluating the potential impact of the risks: After identifying and assessing the probability of a risk, I evaluate the potential impact that it could have on the business. I analyze the impact in terms of financial losses, reputation damage, and legal liabilities.
  4. Developing action plans to mitigate the risk: Finally, based on the findings of the previous stages, I develop effective action plans to mitigate the risk. This may involve developing contingency plans or engaging with stakeholders to find solutions to avoid or minimize potential risks.

During my previous positon as an international counsel for a leading multinational company, I had to assess the risks of acquiring a company based in a politically unstable country. After utilizing the above mentioned four-steps assessment framework, I recommended that the company should not proceed with the acquisition due to the high probability of financial, legal and social risks. This was later found to be a wise decision after the country underwent an unexpected political upheaval that resulted in the expropriation of many foreign businesses' assets.
