📋 Description

• Lead a team of backend engineers on Core Services, including the ledger, decisioning, schedules, rules engine, HRIS integrations, authentication, and directory • Report to the Vice President of Engineering and share Core Services leadership with a peer Engineering Manager • Own people management, team execution, and outcomes • Manage approximately 4–6 engineers initially, with room to hire as the company grows • Run growth-focused 1:1s, set expectations, provide feedback, hire, onboard, and level engineers • Coach project leads and support project kickoffs, technical approaches, updates, and releases • Translate company priorities into sequenced plans and make explicit scope/timeline tradeoffs • Protect operational capacity for production health, incidents, and correctness work • Lead design reviews and champion simple, correct, observable systems • Contribute code, prototypes, and production debugging when needed, then step back • Maintain invariants for idempotency, auditability, reconciliation, and safe retries • Partner with Client Apps, Platform, Customer Engineering, Product, and Ops • Document decisions, surface risks early, and support empowered project teams • Use AI heavily in coding, debugging, design, planning, writing, analysis, 1:1 preparation, hiring, and communication • Attend company-wide onsite events three times per year

🎯 Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience • 2+ years leading teams of approximately 3–8 engineers (or equivalent scope) • Deep software engineering experience in Python/Django or equivalent backend systems • Ability to lead design reviews, enforce engineering standards, and prototype in Python/Django or comparable backend stack • Experience with systems where correctness and reliability are critical • Experience mentoring engineers through 1:1s and setting growth goals against a leveling matrix • Experience handling performance issues directly and hiring • Track record of shipping commitments, creating clarity from ambiguity, and running a healthy SDLC • Heavy personal use of AI for coding, debugging, planning, writing, and operating a team • Ability to review and own AI-assisted output • Experience with Python, Django, Django Rest Framework, PostgreSQL, AWS, and Docker • U.S.-based and able to address U.S. employment visa sponsorship questions
