📋 Description

• Own the health, output, and trajectory of an engineering pod of roughly 6–8 engineers, reporting to the Head of Engineering. • Own the pod’s operating system, including people, execution, delivery health, cross-functional partnership, and continuous improvement. • Establish and run planning, retrospectives, and follow-through. • Clarify priorities, ownership, and expectations, and remove blockers. • Hold standards for accountability, autonomy, psychological safety, and performance. • Monitor roadmap execution, identify stalled or poorly scoped projects, and intervene early. • Run weekly 1:1s, provide continuous feedback, manage performance, support growth, and address performance gaps. • Own onboarding for new engineers, including preparing meaningful work before day one and supporting a high-touch first month. • Maintain documentation, runbooks, and ownership boundaries. • Partner with the Product Manager on planning, prioritization, requirements, tradeoffs, and high-value problems. • Partner with the Technical Lead on architecture, technical quality, technical risk, technical decisions, and technical debt. • Contribute as an IC when appropriate and help ensure incidents lead to durable improvements; on-call is shared team-wide. • Assess pod skills and seniority mix, recommend hiring, interview candidates, help close candidates, and support succession planning. • Communicate pod health, dependencies, tradeoffs, and risks to the Head of Engineering and other stakeholders. • Deliver meaningful outcomes, improve onboarding and team growth, manage quality risks, and help the pod solve problems independently.

🎯 Requirements

• Experience managing engineers directly — ideally 5+ on a product or platform team, with real examples of performance you improved and performance you had to manage out. • A credible engineering background with experience shipping production software, reading PRs, evaluating design documents, and challenging estimates. • A track record of improving delivery predictability under management. • Fluency with modern AI product development, including evals, experiment design, dataset curation, and AI-assisted engineering workflows. • Comfort with ambiguity and high-complexity domains. • Strong product partnership instincts and ability to engage with non-engineering stakeholders. • Crisp written communication. • Directness with care when giving feedback. • Operational and reliability experience, including SLOs, incident response, and postmortems. • Keen awareness of security risks involving sensitive personal data. • Experience hiring and onboarding in a growing organization. • Technical familiarity with TypeScript, React, Vite, Node/Express, Docker, GraphQL/Apollo, Postgres/Aurora, Turborepo/PNPM, AWS, Terraform, Pulumi, Buildkite, Datadog, CloudWatch, and Sentry. • The role requires understanding production software well enough to evaluate technical plans, designs, pull requests, estimates, and technical risk.
