📋 Description

• Own the architecture and evolution of core payments infrastructure across tokenization, wallets, processor integrations, routing, authorization, and reliability • Report to the CTO and serve as a hands-on principal engineer on the payments pod • Evolve processor, gateway, vault, and partner-checkout integrations, including Adyen, NMI, VGS, Spreedly, and Stripe Connect • Bring new payment rails online while keeping transaction behavior consistent, observable, and testable • Own payments product direction from discovery through rollout, including merchant conversations, data analysis, roadmap, specifications, implementation, and post-launch metrics • Design merchant-facing dashboard and agent surfaces for routing, salvage, MID health, threshold breaches, routing changes, and one-click fixes • Improve payments setup so merchants can complete it without support tickets • Own end-to-end tokenization and credential lifecycle, including capture, provisioning, storage, transactions, updates, and expiry • Manage payment method portability, including Apple Pay and Google Pay provisioning, domain verification, provider configuration, and credential migration limitations • Improve approval rates through decline taxonomy, salvage, retries, cascading, 3DS, BIN and routing strategy, card updater, and instrumentation • Own dispute, chargeback, fraud-notification, and card-brand-monitoring data ingestion, normalization, and operational systems • Keep merchants and MIDs clear of monitoring thresholds and expose signals to routing, authorization, and forecasting • Own payment-path SLOs, telemetry, on-call, and incident response • Implement idempotency and reconciliation against processor settlement • Maintain clean, tested, documented code, ADRs / RFCs, and an operationalized agentic software-development lifecycle under continuous PCI assessment • Collaborate directly with merchants and processor partners and own business outcomes rather than tickets

🎯 Requirements

• 10+ years building and shipping production software • Principal-level impact as a hands-on engineer who writes application code today • Proven product judgment and experience deciding what to build based on direct customer evidence • Deep payments experience at a payments company such as a PSP, gateway, vault, orchestration layer, or money-movement platform • Hands-on token vault experience • Production ownership of Apple Pay and Google Pay provisioning, merchant configuration, and domain verification • Ability to reason about cryptograms, network tokens, network transaction IDs, and PCI scope from first principles • Experience migrating stored credentials and wallet tokens between providers, vaults, or processors • Experience integrating and operating against multiple acquirers, gateways, or PSPs concurrently, including routing or cascading • Experience with decline analysis, retry strategy, 3DS, and improving an approval-rate metric • Experience with chargeback flow, representment, TC40 / SAFE fraud reporting, and card-brand monitoring programs such as VAMP and Mastercard equivalents • Knowledge of idempotent payment operations, ledger or system-of-record design, and reconciliation against processor settlement • Experience owning production payment incidents, including detection, containment, merchant communication, and financial remediation • Daily AI coding experience using Claude Code or an equivalent agentic setup • Commercial fluency and strong communication • Experience with ADRs / RFCs and raising engineering standards • Preferred: payment orchestration or multi-PayFac platform experience • Preferred: high-risk or direct response merchant portfolios • Preferred: subscription and recurring billing at scale • Preferred: alternative payment methods and BNPL integrations • Preferred: PCI DSS v4 assessment experience as an engineer
