• Develop or review protective relay settings and relay coordination studies for utility-scale solar, wind, and energy storage systems • Perform short-circuit, fault current, protective device coordination, arc flash, and grounding studies • Design generator, bus differential, transformer differential, feeder overcurrent, distance, breaker failure, and synchrocheck protection schemes • Coordinate islanding detection, anti-islanding protection, and voltage/frequency ride-through settings • Integrate protection systems with SCADA, EMS, and RTU infrastructure • Prepare and review one-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay panel layouts • Review third-party engineer-of-record design packages for compliance with applicable standards • Support relay testing, commissioning, factory and site acceptance testing, energization planning, and initial energization • Support NERC PRC compliance activities, protection system audits, and utility coordination • Mentor junior engineers and develop internal protection engineering standards and design practices • Read and understand electrical project scope during early project phases • Develop proposals incorporating power quality, reliability, and cost efficiency • Develop protection and controls scopes of work with internal and external stakeholders • Review changes, provide recommendations, and serve as a technical resource for Preconstruction and Operations teams • Review contracts and subcontracts related to protection and controls scope and identify opportunities to streamline work and reduce waste
• 10+ years of progressive engineering experience in protection and controls design for high-voltage transmission, substation, or large-scale generation systems • Experience with relay settings development and coordination studies for systems ranging from 13.8 kV through 345 kV • Proficiency with ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP, CAPE, EasyPower, or SKM Power Tools • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited college required, or relevant equivalent industry experience • Familiarity with NERC PRC Reliability Standards, IEEE, NESC, NEC, and NFPA 70E • Working knowledge of IEC 61850, DNP3, and Modbus for relay and SCADA integration • Experience leading and mentoring engineers and driving protection and controls design standards across solar, wind, and energy storage projects • Experience with Python or scripting for engineering automation • Ability to adhere to the National Society of Professional Engineers' code of conduct • Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred but not required
